The JBL D44000 Paragon Ranger - the Most Desirable and Collectible Speaker in the World!|
First released in 1957, the JBL Paragon is the most inspired original audio creation ever produced. No one really knows how many were ever produced by JBL during its production run, but most estimates have it that about 1000 Paragons were hand built one at a time in the 27 years that it was produced – the longest continuous production of a single model in the 60-year history of JBL. That averages to 3 Paragons a month – each one painstakingly crafted with the absolute best hand matched components that JBL had to offer, and the build quality of the mached veneer cabinet is unreal. The result is something that photographs cannot possibly represent because unlike normal speakers the Paragon is in every way a transcendent work of art and seduction. Even if you saw it in a room and didn’t know what it was, you find yourself drawn to it like a moth to a flame.
As a loudspeaker system, it works like none other in that there truly is not a bad seat in the house. When you start listening you realize that the Paragon isn’t just an over-the-top glamorous speaker cabinet with some of the best drivers ever made, but it is actually an incredible sound mixing and dispersion machine. Unlike traditional two cabinet stereo speaker systems, the Paragon is a masterful unitized system that mixes the entire spectrum of diverse audible frequencies in order to properly energize a room in what can only be described as audio rapture. I have listened to a very wide array of speakers in my lifetime and each one has their strengths and weaknesses. Most have issues where there is only a small area where your ears can be located to truly enjoy an optimized listening experience. With some speaker systems you feel that you actually have to lock your head into a single fixed position. This is not the case with the Paragon, and it is a delight to be able to listen far off the central axis and still be mesmerized by the sound quality. Walking through a room while it is playing is also an incredible experience, because you feel that someone is turning the speakers with you as you move, since the normal experience with traditional speakers is that you move in and out of the “Sweet Spot” as you walk around in your room. With the Paragon, the dispersion characteristics are so excellent that the Sweet Spot becomes the whole room!
When paired with exceptional source components and amplification this speaker system is sonically sublime. My wife calls it the "goosebump machine" because that is the effect of hearing your favorite audio passages through this loudspeaker system - it is spellbinding. The internal cabinet labyrinth radiating the dual LE15A woofer energy coupled with the beautiful curved “lens baffle” in front disbursing the two awesome JBL 375 horn’s energy creates a sonic environment that is truly unique and gives you the feeling that you have been immersed in a soundstage. There is nothing else on earth like it. Most people I know who have heard a Paragon that is properly set up feel that they have heard the best home sound system in their lifetime.
The Paragon was a vision born from an amazing collaboration in 1957 – the artful melding of the groundbreaking scientific sound distribution principles developed by Richard Ranger (who won an Academy Award for sound that same year); the inspired conceptual beauty of designer Arnold Wolf (who went on to become the President of JBL); and the physical realization by JBL’s own incredibly gifted team of craftsmen formed the during the renaissance period of JBL cabinetry following the success of the 1954 JBL Hartsfield.

Accolades and reviews abound on the web, and one of the very best audio related web sites anywhere is the Lansing Heritage web site - this JBL D44000 Paragon Ranger is the centerfold of the site, with superb documentation and references.
This JBL Paragon was purchased on November 15th, 1969 by a woman who loved her music. This Paragon was equipped with a complete McIntosh component system and shared the same room with a nine foot Steinway Concert Grand piano. To say that this audio system was taken well care of is an understatement - it was fastidiously preened and maintained. Cosmetically, while it is not flawless, you have to look very hard to find any flaws - consequential or otherwise.
Technically, this speaker is called the JBL D44000 Paragon-Ranger, however just saying Paragon is sufficient - everyone will know that this is it - the KING of loudspeakers! In all the world there is only one that can be called the best, and for the world of speakers the most desirable and collectible speaker system is this JBL Paragon loudspeaker system. Here is an opportunity to own a pristine specimen with no significant cosmetic flaws, with all original factory hand-matched premium drivers and all with their original diaphragms and voice coils / cones. This Paragon performs flawlessly!
Please note that this is a pickup item only ( I will not be packing or shipping this ) and as such payment is via cash upon pickup or a United States Post Office Money Order. Needless to say, this speaker system is truly massive at 9 feet long and 700 pounds (it comes apart into 3 pieces) and requires special accommodations for safe shipment, or for pick up if you are going to audition them first. My goal is a local sale in the San Francisco Bay Area, however I am open to FOB shipments where the buyer hires a company to package, insure and ship this magnificent speaker system.
Important: If you do not have a long term AudiogoN track record, please include your home phone number or I will not respond.
NOTE: I will be updating this post with more photos and information shortly.
