I am the second owner of this unit. They made a variety of different outputs for these so be careful about what you need. This unit has the multichannel analogue output (which can be configured to 2 channel) so does not need a D/A converter. It also has digital output so can be used as a transport with a DAC if you have one that is better than what is already in this unit. Finally it has BNC terminated component video output for DVD video. It plays CD, DVD audio DVD video and more. It does not play SACDs or blu-ray obviously.
I used this in a second system mostly for CDs. I enjoyed the sound quite a bit. I was used to the sound of the Linn Ikemi and I enjoyed this as much as the Linn (which was not true of any other player I have tried). Playing DVD audio disks was amazing, but I only had a few of those. It also works really nicely as a transport into a good DAC. I only had limited experience as a DVD player. The few movies I watched really jumped off the screen but video is really not my thing.
It is in great shape but i am rating it 7/10 for age. I don't see any major scratches and its working perfectly. It has felt feet which I think were added by the original owner.
An important note. When I purchased this on Agon in 2009, the unit was not reading CDs consistently. I sent it to Meridian and they replaced the ROM drive and did firmware updates. It has been working perfectly since. i am happy to provide that receipt if you care to see it but it was 353.00 worth of repairs. So not only is it a wonderful unit but has a relatively new drive and relatively new firmware. I have not done any updates since.
This post is way too long. Anyway, it is a great sounding unit and a steal for $600.00 even if you only use it for CD. I will include a custom made BNC to RCA component video cable. I have the remote (which is large and odd, if you know meridian remotes!), the meridian connector cable to hook up to other meridian products if you have them, power cord, original box/packing, manuals and an outer box that meridian sent the unit back in for extra shipping protection.

I included a review below:
From an online review:

The Meridian 598 is a single-chassis player that will read many different discs, including both DVD-Audio and DVD-Video discs, plus CDs that are dedicated to DTS surround sound music, standard 16-bit CDs and more. The 598 is Meridian’s answer to consumer demand for a more affordable version of their critically acclaimed reference transport player, the Meridian 800. The 598 measures just over 12.5 inches in width, 13 inches in depth and a scant three-and-a-half inches in height. The component weighs 14 pounds and sells for between $5,200 and $6,000, depending on the options selected

When it comes to stereo music, the 598 performs very well. In fact, I prefer it to the much-respected and comparably-priced Mark Levinson 390S CD-only player. It is not the very best-sounding player I have ever heard, a title claimed by the $20,000 Linn Sondek CD12, but it is no slouch in comparison. The Meridian 598 is solidly designed and very reliable

If you are looking for a single player to handle both your movies and music at very close to the highest conceivable level, look no further. You might ask me to lead you towards a combo DVD-Audio/SACD player in its price class that compares solidly, but I can’t. I am afraid the Meridian 598, for what it does, is in a class of its own.
