Testimonials (on all of the new KEF Reference models)

"Taken overall, KEF’s Reference 207/2 offers superb measured performance. This is a speaker for which no excuses need be made. That it sounds as good as it does is no mystery.

While spaces remain in my heart for the Sonus Faber Amati Homage, the MBL 111B, the Dynaudio Confidence C4, the original Revel Ultima Studio, and the Wilson Audio Sophia, I must say that the Series 2 revision of Kef’s Reference 207, the 207/2, is overall the best-sounding full-range speaker I have used in my current listening room.  To all intents and purposes, it is without flaw; the lows are extended and well defined, the midrange is pure, the treble is free of grain and naturally balanced, the dynamics are awesome, and the stereo imaging is accurate and stable.  The 207/2 simply defines neutrality, but without losing sight of the musical message."
- John Atkinson, Stereophile, February, 2008

The Headline is no hype: Audio Revelation was ready to start carrying the most respected, best reviewed electrostatic speaker on the market when Kef brought a pair of the model 203s over for audition. I didn’t let them go for nearly a month as I couldn’t believe how wonderful they were and had to have my die-hard audio club guys check them out. The verdict came in with such enthusiasm that I decided to carry the Kef line instead of the planned electrostatics. Their Coincident tweeter / midrange offers coherence and imaging to rival any speaker and their clarity, purity, tonality and speed surpassed all expectations. The further advantage of a conventional box speaker for dynamics, volume, extension, beauty, small footprint and easy setup makes these top winners. My best friend who can order anything at my cost took a pair of the 205/2’s home to try then ordered a pair giving up his previous $10,000 speakers which were, sadly, put to near shame. Kef has truly re-invented themselves with this new Reference line!
- Jay, owner Audio Revelation

"As for the 201/2’s sound - Loved it! ... What I also couldn’t have anticipated was how much ultimately, I responded to the Reference 201/2. It’s a truism that no transducer is perfect, but the KEF Reference 201/2 is an absolute gem - if not flawless, then damn close."
 - Wes Phillips, Stereophile, July, 2008

"The Kef Reference 201/2 is one of the best measuring loudspeakers I have had the pleasure to test in my lab. As WP found, a pair of them will offer a superbly transparent, grain-free window on the recorded acoustic"
 - John Atkinson, Stereophile, July, 2008

"The 201/2 is not only one of the most innovative, versatile, feature-rich, and finely constructed stand-mounted speakers I’ve reviewed, but it’s also the best-sounding as well.

I find the 201/2s far more pleasing, and their overall construction, including cabinet shape along with fit’n’finish, is a clear step beyond most speakers that I see, including the Dynaudio C1, which seems rather ordinary in comparison. And let’s not forget that a pair of 201/2s is $1500 less than a pair of C1s."
- Doug Schneider, Soundstage, December, 2007.

"KEF is trying to recapture the audiophile "high ground" with its new Reference Series, and if the KEF Reference 205/2 is any indication, they are very serious about doing it. Indeed, KEF’s founder, Raymond Cooke, would be proud. The 205/2 uses a terrific new Uni-Q driver that does the work of the two previous tweeters in the original 205 and provides a more coherent, extended, and "sweet" high end response. As in previous Uni-Qs, the tweeter is mounted at the center of the midrange cone so the outputs of these two units are time aligned, yet in the new Reference Series, both the tweeter and the midrange driver have been significantly improved. Female voice was just beautiful with no hint of excess sibilance yet with lots of fine inner detail. Imaging was precise and the soundstage was broad and deep. You won’t hear any sluggish or bloated bass on this speaker and coherence is very good.

The 205/2 should also integrate better into more home environments as it doesn’t have the supertweeter mounted on the top of the cabinet and the "fit and finish" of this speaker is outstanding. It is hand built in England, available in a choice of high gloss woods, and includes a unique "customer care kit" in a separate, nicely finished box, including the 205/2’s feet, a wrench, a level, wire jumpers, a boundary compensation circuit and more. It’s a nice touch."
- Jim Hannon - AVGuide.com

"We rely heavily on the KEF Reference speakers to be an unfailing authority in our mastering process. As audio enhancement specialists our job is to make a good master great and make music sound its best, no matter what the genre, from classic analogue to pristine digital gear, we’re equipped to enhance and refine. And our Reference 207 speakers help us achieve that job."
- Carl Rowatti, co-principal and chief engineer, Trutone Inc CD and LP mastering studio where such legendary musicians such as John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, and Bruce Springsteen made history

Overview

A three-way bass reflex design, Model 203/2 shares the technology that makes the floorstanders great, but in a more compact package: the same new generation KEF engineering, the same high quality components and the same bulletproof build quality.

Stereo imaging is immaculate, wherever you sit. Whether for music or home theatre, it strikes the perfect balance between size and performance.

Naturally, performance can be fine-tuned for your room acoustics. The KEF Uni Balance feature allows you to adjust bass output to compensate for the proximity of the loudspeakers to the walls; at the high frequency end, a four-position adjustment gives ample ’brightness’ control to compensate for the room’s sound absorption characteristics.

The curved section cabinets are massively braced to eliminate box colourations, and the open chassis design with vented cones eliminates any trapped air noise. Magnetically shielded like the rest of the range, the 203/2 combines heavyweight muscle with intricate delicacy right across the frequency range. Stereo imaging is superb, the detailing immaculate and the response so fluid you could almost drink it.
