Testimonials (on all Luxman products)

"...The Luxman amp is head and shoulders over the CD receivers in terms of sonic authority, tactility, centeredness, continuity, easefulness, soundstage size, image specificity - you name it - and in spades. It's the difference between "This is pretty good" and "This is addictive." Luxman's L-505u integrated is my new default recommendation in integrated amplifiers, and at $3,700, $$ for exceptional value."
- John Marks, Stereophile, June, 2009

"Based on its price, level of sophistication, quality, features and refinement, we bestow our rare Maximum Mojo Award on the Luxman L-505u integrated amplifier."

"Sonically, from top to bottom the L-505u exhibited strength and quality with no readily identifiable weak links... its high level of consistency throughout is remarkable - a tribute perhaps to the three decades of refinement... There is sparkle but never sizzle. Bass is deep and firmly controlled but never shouts "Hey! Listen to me!" The all important midrange imparts a sense of clarity and purity that conveys male and female vocals flawlessly without being overly warm nor overly forward. Balanced. How do they do that?...I think I can say with no qualms - the Luxman L-505u rocks! We think it's special and cannot wait to hear more of Luxman's expansive audio line."

Winner of SoundStage's Reviewer's Choice Award (February 2009)

"The L-509u was one dead-quiet integrated amp with an ultra-low noise floor, resulting in the blackest of backgrounds from which the music would emerge in solid, focused, three-dimensional images. Additionally, the L-509u was tonally neutral, and did not favor one end of the frequency spectrum over another; instead its sonic signature was geared toward delivering the least-colored, most musically natural performance, regardless of the type of music." "What impressed me most, however, was the L-509u's control of the bass." "Subterranean? Without a doubt."
- Uday Reddy, Soundstage.com (read the review)

"Boasting classic looks and features (e.g. balance, tone, and loudness controls) that hark back to the great designs of the sixties, magnificent build, and absolutely gorgeous sonics, this Japanese import is my kind of integrated amplifier."
- Paul Seydor, The Absolute Sound

Reviewers Choice Award - Soundstage.com

"As I think back about all of the amps I've heard, or at least the ones that come easily to mind, I can remember none that seemingly incorporates the strengths of them all better than the Luxman B-1000f. It has a fundamentally neutral signature, standard-setting bass depth and linearity, and doesn't display obvious colorations that will cause you to revoice your system to overcome them. There's no solid-state leanness or tubelike warmth, no bass bloat that gives the illusion of power, no zingy treble. There's just an open window on the intrinsic sound of the recording, a sonic character that passes on the signal fed to it with great detail and dynamic expression."
- Marc Mickelson, Soundstage.com (read the review)

"The Luxman's harmonic presentation was as fundamentally correct as I've heard from any amplifier, tube or solid-state. And in addition to its notable tonal and textural balance , the M-800A developed the sense of "continuousness" I usually associate with tube amps, especially those with tube rectification."
- Michael Fremer, Stereophile Nov. 2008 (read the review)

"The easy part of this review is writing about the sound of the M-600A. It is fantastic! This is a wonderfully musical amplifier that brings music to life... Compared to my stock system, the M-600A let me hear considerably more inner detail and allowed me to delve much more deeply into the music. If you think I enjoyed my time with this Luxman you are right!

The C-600f preamp is a wonderful unit that sounds very alive and dynamic with vanishingly low distortion and excellent transparency that might be as good as anything else out there today. The lows reach as low as the other system components can go and the highs are crystal clear and very extended. The midrange is neutral and musical and images jump out of the plane of the speakers. It was easy to enjoy music played through this preamp and its detail allowed it to be used as a tool to assess recordings, sources or other components.

- Mike Wechsberg. Positive Feedback.com (read the review)

"The DU-50 will play every form of five-inch disc except HD-DVD or Blu Ray Disc; but, as befits its "music player" designation, the importer Philip O'Hanlon of On A Higher Note prefers to emphasize its musical values, which include a persuasive impression of body and vitality, with tonal variety and beauty to rival vinyl sources, especially from SACD and DVD-A. Its functional characteristics make it the easiest, most intuitive-to-use digital player I've yet encountered."
- Paul Seydor, The Absolute Sound - Issue 177

"Even before switching them on, there's that whiff of satisfaction that only comes with the handling of a well crafted object."
- Ken Kessler, HiFi News & Record Review

Overview

Luxman L-590Ax Integrated Amplifier

The Luxman L-590Ax Integrated Amplifier builds upon renowned L-590A II and improves on it especially with the new LECUA 1000WM attenuator (the LECUA stands for Luxman Electric Controlled Ultimate Attenuator and the WM stands for Weighting Matrix) and the circuitry that has been adopted from Luxman´s flagship C-1000f control amplifier and B-1000f mono power amplifier. Luxman claims the LECUA 1000WM to be the ´ultimate attenuator´ that aspires to be the first absolutely lossless attenuator ever. It converts the music signal from a voltage into a current, controls gain, and then reconverts the current into a voltage. A position of the volume knob is detected by sensors to be consequently evaluated by processor board that controls the current switches combinations. As the LECUA does not imply any impedance changes there is no deterioration of S/N ratio and frequency response remains totally uniform and there is virtually zero tracking difference between both channels. The entire process is carried out in analog domain including electrical suppression of RFI and EMI interferences.

The Luxman L-590AX Integrated Amplifier keeps on using unusual negative feedback (Only Distortion Negative Feedback version 3.0A) that virtually feeds back only distortion components generated during amplification to extend the bandwidth of the amplifier to 20-100,000Hz and increase S/N ratio to 107dB which is among the best for an integrated amplifier. The beauty of such a solution lies in feeding back only a ‘corrupted’ part of signal – should there is no distortion present in the signal the ODNS circuitry remains idle.

Principally, the Luxman L-590AX Integrated Amplifier is a bipolar amp with push-pull topology in pure class A, achieving 2x30 sweet watts into 8 ohm load or 2x60W sweet watts into 4 ohm load. For the sake of the new ´X´line of its components, Luxman had to adjust the dimensions of the L-590AX to the new (and narrower) Luxman standard of 440 (W) × 193 (H) × 463 (D) mm – it will come handy should you already own a Luxman’s SACD player to harmonize both components on your rack.

The rear panel of the L-590AX shows typical array of connections: four RCA line inputs, two XLR balanced inputs, MM/MC inputs, a recorder inputs and a PRE-OUT option. With the L-590AX it is possible to use two pairs of speakers connected to switchable binding posts that accept any type of a speaker wire’s termination in case you manage to remove a tiny plug that seals them. There supported is a headphone jack output on the L-590Ax’ s front panel and through an aluminum remote control that works well also with Luxman’s CD players.

The RA-17 remote control not only handles Mono, Line Straight (tone controls defeat), Separate (Home Theater Processor Bypass), Subsonic (rumble filter for vinyl playback) and even Loudness (mild boost of bass & treble for low level listening). The RA-17 also controls the main functions of the Luxman D-05, 06 & 08 CD / SACD players.

Pure Class A

Thanks to the always-on nature of the topology and the removal of an entire type of distortion, allied to sound that excels in a midrange liquidity, low-level detail, superb dynamics and transparency, its devotees are more than happy to put up with low efficiency and heat. What Class A always seems to offer above everything else is a tube-like sound without the maintenance hassle of tubes.

Input Selector

The Luxman L-590Ax Integrated Amplifier features the new high quality electronic selector switch, which is the heart of the C-1000f pre-amp (one of Luxman’s 80th anniversary commemoration models). The sound quality deterioration using the new electronic input switch is now minimal, while channel separation and crosstalk efficiency were raised substantially in comparison with the L-590A. In addition the illuminated position indicator around the input selector knob makes it much easier to view the selected position even from afar.

Volume Control

The integrated amplifiers also benefit from the C1000f in that they use a variation of the LECUA 1000 volume control. At any single volume setting only a few resistors are in circuit per channel - the less devices in the signal path, the purer the sound, and the cleaner the music. At low listening levels, potentiometers have trouble keeping both channels in balance, so one channel might easily be 3dB louder than the other. With the volume control made of discrete parts, this is no longer an issue.

Amplifier

The amplifier section has not been ignored either; noise and distortion has been kept to a minimum with the introduction of ODNF version 3.0A. The deep, rich Class A tone is available here is Luxman’s hall-mark sound.

ODNF

Luxman holds many patents for audio engineering, amongst them is the application of Global Negative Feedback to the output stage, which while widely used throughout the audio industry, they no longer use themselves. Luxman nowadays use a distortion reduction circuit called Only Distortion Negative Feedback (ODNF). This system works by isolating noise & distortion at the output from the music signal and sparingly applying negative feedback to suppress them. Conventional negative feedback systems can have an adverse effect on the music, introducing phase distortion. "The circuit features such an ultra-wide range, ultra- high slew rate and ultra low distortion that it does not use phase compensation for the music signal amplifying circuits." This new technology also ensures that need for a DC servo circuit is alleviated, again improving sound quality.

Pure Copper Cabling

Extensive listening was applied to the high purity, oxygen free copper (OFC) cables which are used to transmit the signal throughout the amplifier. These cables have a minimal audible signature and minimal electrical effect on the audio waveform. Linear wide bandwidth frequency response is achieved by the low measured values of both inductance and capacitance. The result, the cables do not color the sound, but pass it through, quickly.

Phono Amplifier

Enjoy the ability to play or record your LP collection with the built-in phono stage which accommodates both Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil (MC) cartridges. The MM input has approximately 35dB of gain, while the MC input has 55dB of gain (a multiplication of 550x). We recommend MC cartridges with an output >.7mV which is lower than that you might consider using the MT-88 moving coil step-up transformer.

Subsonic Filter

A subsonic filter is also easily accessible from the remote control in order to remove unwanted low frequency noise while you are listening to a record. When the stylus hits the groove, you might notice the woofers modulating in and out, even though there is no music playing yet. This is due to the ultra low frequency information (below the music); this unnecessary information places a strain on the amplifier and is best filtered out. A mono switch is also available for both loudspeaker setup as well as mono record playback. Both the Mono & Subsonic filter are accessible from the remote control.

Headphone Amplifier

There is also a high quality headphone amplifier, accessible from the front panel, ideal for late night listening. You can turn off the speaker output by a simple click of the Speaker Selector. The headphone outlet sees the same signal as the speaker terminals, there is one resistor per channel in the signal path to pad down the output.

Two Pairs of Speaker Terminals

The Luxman L-590Ax Integrated Amplifier has large speaker terminals for driving two individual sets of speakers. At the turn of the speaker switch, it is possible to change between the two pairs of speakers easily. In addition, if the A+B function is used; Takasina capacitors are used to parallel the output which permits bi-wiring a single pair of speakers.

Tone Controls

The tone controls might seem like an anachronism in this day and age of minimalism, but they can be remarkably effective in bring to life a less than perfect music collection. We all have music gems in our collection that are sonically challenging. A lot of the 1980's CDs are quite harsh sounding and the digital glare can be quite fatiguing. Reduce the treble slightly and while the harsh CD is not going to suddenly sound like a reference recording, at least it will now be perfectly listenable. Sit back relax, enjoy the music & forgot about the HiFi. When you want to bypass the tone controls, just engage the Line Straight switch, either from the remote control or from the front panel.

NOTE: You might also use the Tone Controls for room acoustics’ correction. They are in effect simplified room equalization controls.
