| The Model 18b
is designed to work either with or without a preamplifier.
You can use it as a stand alone D/A converter with its fixed
output, or run a power amplifier from its variable output.
If you play CD's only, this piece will allow you to bypass the
preamplifier all together. Forget everything you've heard
about lack of dynamics and bass when going direct. That only
happens because those other devices were not designed for the
job. This model has been designed from the start to fill
this exact role. It will drive any amplifier on the market
to perform to the fullest capability of your system.
Even if you
like to use a preamp, with tubes perhaps, you might still
use the variable output on this converter. Why? By
adjusting the amount of signal going to the input tubes of our
preamplifier, you can change the sound quite a bit. Some
CD players' outputs actually overload the input tubes of a
preamp, while others give you an extremely fragile signal with
which to feed your preamp. There's nothing fragile about the
18b. This is a high quality, well built piece of gear with
overkill capability.
