Description

We're currently living with the in-laws so at least I have a room but it couldn't get much worse. It's in the middle of the house, one full wall the rest are either open or riddled with entry ways. So no quiet environment or accustics what so ever. I'm using this time in exile to upgrade what I can and remember the 'good old days' of living in an apt. and having a rectangular/semi-enclosed room. Any comments/advice good or bad is welcomed. thanks

So have you been listening more now after using the statement with the denon? What cd did you use when you switched the cables? See you soon bro.

Doug,
Thank you for the kind words. What I did for the shelves was first give em a coat of primer so the MDF wouldn't suck up all my paint. Over that I used a rattle can of "clariet wine" basically a dark brick red, 2 coats of that with light sanding between coats. Finally to finish everything off I gave each about 4 coats of hi-gloss poly with light sanding with #0000 steel wool between coats. I havent had any problems with component feet but my cones of course make points.
Very nice job on yours, I like the double wide. and the gears quite nice as well, wanna donate any to your long lost brother?.....

Cool new pics. I like the dedicated "stands" for the juice bar and U.O. Although you should of shot some new ones of the rack as a whole, so we could see all of our gorgeous shelves at once. Cant wait until your all back to Washington and the systems can be combined. Nice work bro!

jlind325is

J, nice system. What caught my eye was the color on your shelves. Check out my system--it's like we're separated twins or something!

How did you finish the shelves?

Fwiw, I painted mine with enamel (black on some and on others colonial red, I think) and then sanded, then hit it with many coats of clear spray. Then, more sanding. Got down to 1500 grit wet sanding and called it quits. Nice, mirror shine, but the finish is soft and component feet tend to stick. Guess I may just buy my next shelving...

System edited: Added pics of Statement PC, UO, and Juice Bar. My next upgrade will be getting the hell outta AZ. Will be moving back to good ole WA in July, and hopefully to a dedicated room.

The new PS Audio Statement PC is quite nice, really opened up the sound stage and added a bit of refinement. I can't wait till its finally broke in. This week I'm getting the juice bar and super punch so I'll add pics then.

j_green

So hows the Statement?

jlind325is

Very classy bro. i think that color will compliment the end caps well when you finally finish them. I cant beleive how long ago i made those, i think i was a junior in high school. did you use a spray on poly or did you brush it on? i think this weekend i will start my secondary rack although i would like to get the samson rack. maybe i should just pony up and do it? but then again i would like to get an integrated amp with that money. later

System edited: Got the triple points and made new shelves for my rack. The combination of the two really made it look a hell of a lot better, and the points helped with sonics a bit. Next stop an aftermarket powercord from PS Audio. the battle continues...

j_green

Right on!! Thats cool that she noticed a difference, she is an aspiring audiophile who just wont admit it. lol. Are you getting the tripe points used? i am considering getting some triple points as well and then move the surefeet to under the UPC. Isnt it a nice feeling when the plug "locks" into the outlet. kachunk, its not going anywhere. As i posted on my thread i moved the vons and reput the spikes in. As of right now i am just enjoying the music. I still want to get rid of the NAD soon but what i am hearing now is letting that be no big priority. im swinging by the audio shop today, who knows what he might let me demo this weekend. later

Yes there was. Zeke must have stashed it there the other day. little bugger. Well I got my Ultimate Outlet two days ago. It really lowered the noise floor and gave more definition/clarity overall, even Kristy said it sounded less "muddy". Listening has definitely become more enjoyable. I can’t wait till my length of power cord comes up for sale to help increase the benefits. But in the meantime I have a set of ultimate triple points on their way. So I'll keep ya posted.

j_green

Is there a cd hiding under your vcr?

jlind325is

damn that s-video cable is big!!! you totally got to find a better way of supporting the cable, the cup just dosent cut it! lol. Although i shouldnt be talking with scrap wood supporting my power cables. It looks like you rearranged some things since i was down? wasnt your rack on the outside, or im i just thinking of seattle? and the chair to the right wasnt there if i am remembering right. it sure is nice see that gear again, oh those vr3s. good times man good times.

Mdhoover, Your response didnt sound flippant at all, just that you know where I'm at. I came from great soundstaging, alright depth, and articulate/tight/deep bass to none of the above. All with the same system just different state and room. Luckily we only have 9 months left of this and I can be onto audio nirvana once again.

Thanks for the support,
Jessie

Jlind325is:

Hey, thanks for the clarification, that's good to know. Also, thanks for the compliment. I've stumbled onto some great products and have gotten very lucky to have smart friends, like Duane (a phenomenal dealer who has tolerated my unending questions for well over a decade), Klaus Bunge (I consider Klaus to be a friend just because of how well he's treated me, even though we've never met face to face), Dale Pitcher (same thing, we haven't met but I feel that he's been a friend and I hope he feels the same way), Tvad from Audiogon, and others here on Audiogon. I don't consider myself to be an expert, but I do try to learn, and this is a great website to do that. My posts are too long, though. :))

Mdhoover-

Your post didnt come off unsympathetuc at all. Not even close. I was just agreeing with J_Green that his room IS hell in my opinion. From what i have read of your numerous posts you know what you are talking about and have given good advice, keep it up. We all appreciate it. I am a novice and if you have any advice for my set up i would be glad to hear it. thanks Justin

Jlind325is:

The response I posted wasn't intended to be flippant or unsympathetic at all, and I apologize if it did sound that way. It was actually meant to try to find a silver lining to the "cloud", and not to be a smart a-- response. I can see how it might be interpreted that way, however, so maybe it failed. What I was trying to say was basically what you said, i.e. "Hang in there bro!! there is sound at the end of the tunnel!" I feel the same way. The only point in mentioning my own acoustically handicapped room was to raise the possibility that maybe some of the problems could be reduced. I apologize for not stating it as well as I had intended.

Mdhoover-

I have heard J_Greens room and it almost brought a tear to my eye. His system is what got me into this hobby, or should i say this addiction. to hear it in this state(room hell) was sadening. everthing i loved about how it sounded no longer existed. Hang in there bro!! there is sound at the end of the tunnel! Justin

jlind325is

hey you posted!!! right on. I like the title. You going to post pics soon? i miss being able to hear those VR3's every couple of weeks. Soon enough you all will be up here and we will decide whos sounds the best!!! When the UO coming in?

If "exile" means an interval during which you're waiting to purchase a home or different apartment, then I'd just relax and enjoy the ride. The wait will make your final success just that much sweeter. My opinion only, not infallible. Only because you asked.

Also, FWIW: I have a huge "entertainment" center (which suddenly was present when I got home one day!!) positioned RIGHT in between the speakers, and the left side of the room (when facing the speakers) is almost completely open. There is a doorway and an open hallway on the same wall as the speakers, and the speakers are positioned along the LONGEST wall of the room. Also, the "rear" wall is 60-80% or so occupied by windows. One person posted to a thread that I was "obviously not a dedicated audiophile" after viewing the incriminating photos. With all those acoustic handicaps, my system sounds nearly perfect, so much so that my Sennheiser HD 600's now don't sound good enough to me, to the point where I'm finding myself on the verge of upgrading to Stax Lamda Pro Signatures (However, see footnote below).

So.........it may be possible to overcome most (or all) of those impediments and still be satisfied with the results. In my case, both of the dealers who sold me speakers busted their tails positioning them in the room.

FOOTNOTE: (A LOT OF THE HEADPHONE PROBLEM IS PROBABLY DUE TO THE RAMSEY SHA 1 HEADPHONE AMP I'M USING, WHICH IS POWERFUL AND A GREAT VALUE, BUT PROBABLY NOT WHAT MANY OF US A'GON-IZERS WOULD CONSIDER "AUDIOPHILE").
