According to Green Mountain Audio:
"Chroma is the new, very-high performance version of our (also new) Rio II speaker, selling for US$2995/pair. Specifications remain unchanged compared to original Rio, although the sound quality is enormously better. A fundamental breakthrough in speaker design was made back in 2011 and since applied to many existing Owner's speakers, leaving no time to update our website. Retailers have the new versions.
"After forty years of looking for a solution, our designer found a way to extend time coherence across a very wide frequency range, instead of only in the spectrum where a tweeter crosses over. This technology we call XTCTM (for eXtended-range Time Coherence). It was accomplished by changing the values of parts used in our still-simple crossover circuits, so there was little change in cost.
"Every speaker always has a low-frequency mechanical time-delay, a delay which begins around middle-C on the piano and continues to grow as we approach the low bass. In the bass, the time delay becomes equivalent to the 'woofer' being located many feet behind the location of the mids and highs. With this delay now banished from bass to treble, the sound you hear is best described as being a fully right-brain experience.
"One no longer actively listens for audiophile attributes such as detail, imaging, and dynamics--as those are all now easily audible to anyone and everyone, from any record or CD. Instead, one becomes fully engaged by the flow and energy of the music- the way it makes you feel. It has been quite exciting to learn of people's reactions, including comments such as, "made my wife cry." We look forward to publishing details about this new design methodology on our website, a delay for which we apologize. We chose to first upgrade existing customers' speakers, since it's quite unfair to surprise recent Owners with an upgrade to what they had just purchased.
"Also included in Chroma and Rio II is Audio Magic's nano-Stream treatment of the wires leading to the woofer in both models. In the new Eos HX and Calypso HX, their entire crossovers and wiring harnesses are treated by Audio Magic. In all models, efficiency as heard on music is now also much higher- equivalent to 95db+ speakers. Above one Watt peak on Chroma, Rio II and Eos HX, it becomes too loud to talk when eight feet way.
