For sale by original owner. Absolutely mint condition. Low Hours (probably barely burned in). Original box, manual, remote. Will be TRIPLE BOXED for shipping. EDIT/UPDATED COMMENT as to why I'm selling such a new amp - I have had a stroke. Because of that I've decided to cut back on my hobby. I'm in the process of selling 3 out 4 of my amplifiers, and this one is the last to (regretfully) go. It really is a sweet playing amp. PER VPI: The Limited Edition of only 100 units VPI 299D Integrated Tube Amplifier with Phono Stage! Switchable from 120 Volt 60Hz to 220 Volt 50Hz Operation. A project between VPI's Harry Weisfeld and VAS' Steven Leung, this tube amplifier sounds great and has been and is currently in use in Mat & Harry's soundrooms! Please be aware, this will be a limited edition product. When it is gone it will be gone forever. The built in phono stage features a generous gain level of 45db allowing the use of MC and MM cartridges. The preamplifier section provides an additional 12db of gain to give you the great control and dynamics you are looking for! The VPI 299D Integrated Tube Amp also has 4 independent bias controls for each output tube to give you maximum power and clarity at all times. Each tube's bias is easily adjusted and is displayed on the analog gauge on the front chassis. The addition of tone controls and headphone output make the VPI 299D Integrated Tube Amp a Modern Classic! Hooking the 299D into the VPI factory test system Weisfeld Snr and Leung were bowled over by what they heard and so set to work on taking it apart to reverse engineer a new amplifier based upon the Scott’s circuit design. Leung then reportedly spent a good number of hours switching out capacitors to voice the VPI version, ensuring a richer/classic 60s sound. “It’s a pure nostalgia piece”, says Weisfeld Snr. He’s not wrong. The front panel connotes classic Marantz about which Weisfeld Snr. says, “There’s no way we could make something with such a quality finish here in the USA without blowing the retail price (US$4000) through the roof so we’ve outsourced production of the chassis to China.” Leung is louder and more overtly enthusiastic about his new co-creation. He informs us that the amplifier pushes 50 wpc into 8 Ohms and can accommodate KT88, 6L6 and EL34 tubes, each of which must be manually biased. Then comes the feature that ties the turntable story together. The VPI ‘Outsider’/299D will sport an in-built MM/MC phono stage which will be good for cartridge outputs down to 0.8mV. A headphone output will also be added to production models when shipping begins . . ."

Why are you selling? Hard to find reviews on this unit...curious as you unit is barely broke in. Well I I suppose in reality I put maybe 150 / 200 hours on it. Currently I'm enjoying moving towards old vintage gear (I just had a set of MC40's restored and they are my amps currently). Over the past couple years I've gotten to know the guy most responsible for the design - Steve Leung with VAS - and he is very committed to his gear. He leans more towards a "classic" tube sound. Harry Weisfield (also a classic gear fan) and Steve only made a hundred of these really as sort of a one time project that they just did for the love of it. The sound is well balanced, with both great detail/extension and warmth (its tube rectified via 5AR4). It's a beautifully crafted amp as you can see from the photos. Feel free to [filtered] direct for further detail. |
