Stax ELS-F81 Electrostatic Speakers in excellent working condition and good cosmetic condition.

These are classic, rare, highly desirable vintage audiophile speakers. They are in excellent working condition and very good cosmetic condition (considering their age), although there is some minor evidence of the cosmetic effects of their 35 years of age. I have one of the original boxes and packaging material, but I have the original protective foam protection/packaging for the electrostatic elements for both speakers.  I will construct a sturdy new box for the other speaker and pad the speaker very well. Original documentation is included, although that isn't much. Serial numbers for these speakers are 145 and 147.

The detail, separation, and sound stage imaging of these speakers is outstanding!

The very thin foam sheet behind the electrostatic elements of one of the speakers has fallen apart from age, and has been removed with no sonic difference that I can hear.  This foam has started to come off of the frame on the other speaker (please see the photo). There are a few minor age cracks in the teak veneer (see composite photo of top corner of speaker and grill), and a few small dings/nicks in the stands/bases. The grill covers have minor wear at some of the corners (see composite photo).  The mesh protective screen on the back of one speaker has a small dent (see photo) that does no harm whatsoever.  All in all, these are in great shape and will still look very nice in your listening room.

In general, electrostatic speakers do not produce a lot of bottom end, so a sub-woofer is pretty much a necessity in my opinion. The ELS-F81 speakers need serious amplification and sub-woofers to achieve their best sound. I use a pair of sub-woofers in a bi-amplified system with a crossover at 100Hz.
