Ive got a anthem Amp 1 by sonic frontiers up for sale. It is 40w 10Hz-65KHz -3dB EL-34 stereo tube amp.
The story on this amp is a strange one. I got this from a guy who had tried to modify it to use a different type of tube. also he tried to flip the pcb board around and It didn't work too well. He fried some of the traces and killed the regulators in the power supply. I got it from him in pieces and went to fixing it. I tested the transformers first cause, lets face it, if they are shot its a boat anchor. I used a power-supply to load test them to make sure they where not damaged. And then i tested the outputs to confirm they where to spec and the bandwidth actually was a few Hz better than stated from the factory. I stripped the pcb, fixed the damage to the traces replaced any through holes and tested to make sure all was well. Im a big fan of over engineering to last a long time. If a 50volt 80c capacitor is good enough then 75v 85c will last longer, right? With that philosophy, i set to rebuilding the amp. I used metal film 1% 600v resistors where i could. I tried to go up in wattage also if possible. I changed the bias pots to multi turn high quality trimmers. I rewired the outputs of the transformers with higher voltage wire. anything in the signal path was of good quality ( not made from the gold found in ponce de leon pockets but good) as recommended by the man who designed it. Film dale resistors, film caps, some silver, and teflon insulated wire where i could. I updated the input and output connectors and used shielded mogami low capacitance wire for input. The power-supply was rebuilt using higher voltage and capacitance power caps. All of the semiconductors where replaced. Some with better specs than the originals. I changed the feedback a little to my tastes and my equipment. Lastly i changed the power LED from boring green to dark blue cause i thought it was cool.
I am a qualified technician. I have built amplifiers, preamps, speakers, turntables from scratch, some of my own design for friends family. I love this stuff. So rest assured that this was done right and if not abused it will last for a very long time. It has been in use for 2 years off and on, and it sings. If you wish to have me make changes or upgrade components, we can talk. I have a few sets of tubes that will come with this amp
Several 12AX7 to roll, some NOS that I've collected.
2 matched sets of 12AU7 or variants for the phase splitters.
And 2 sets of matched quads output tubes. 1 set of Golden Lion KT-77 1 set of Electro-Harmonix EL34 All of these tubes have maybe 60hrs on them. Tubes alone are worth 200+$ And give you a chance to play with tube rolling.
The bad: the guy who tried to modify this before me cut the top cage. I fixed it and it looks good, its just not stock. See pics
It has some dings on it from use but it looks nice and i have had it in my system off and on for 2 years. It just doesn't get used much and it needs to find a better home. Ive got a few Mac's on my bench that will be replacing this soon.
It will come with gloves, manual and schematics with my changes and notes. It will be well packed.
Buyer will have to pay the shipping. I will send the price based on your location. Or come listen and pick it up. Im near Chicago.
My account is new here at audiogon only because i don't remember my login info from years ago. I bought several things way back before A Gone changed its format. ( i liked the old one better you cold click on the brands you wanted to shop for) so I'm not really new.....
Any questions ask. More pics? Ask.i found some pics of the rebuild that i added too.
