For
sale is my Sansui TU9900 tuner, which was fully restored and upgraded in 2015
by tuner guru Bill Ammons. Bill is one of the contributors to fmtunerinfo.com,
which is the foremost website on vintage tuners.

Bill summarized his work as follows:

"As far as the TU-9900, the unit was upgraded with new and in some cases
larger electrolytic capacitors. Several PCB's that I built were added to the
tuner. A (-) power supply PCB to replace the poorly designed stock unit, a
narrow band IF PCB to replace the high distortion ceramic filter that stock to
the tuner. For the audio path modifications the old TA-7136 Op Amps were
removed and adapter PCB's were installed to allow installation of low
distortion 8 PIN DIP OP Amps (I think the OPA 134AP's were in your tuner.
Lastly, a second stereo separation control PCB was installed, to allow
independent adjustment of stereo separation in both the IF band mode of
operations. [He also converted the power plug to an IEC.]

The tuner was then aligned on a digital FM test set (Sencore SG-80)."

After completing the upgrades, Bill reported the following test results:

"Distortion @ 1 kHz - stereo 100% modulation

Wide IF mode 0.06%

Narrow IF mode 0.20%

Stereo Separation - 1 kHz 100% modulation

Wide IF mode 52 dB

Narrow IF mode 49 dB

65 dBf RF input quieting (unweighted)

Stereo 72 dB

Mono 75 dB

50 dB quieting points (unweighted)

Stereo 18 uV

Mono 0.5 uV

All of these numbers are excellent and typical of a fully upgraded TU-9900.

The Dolby outputs are now set for a flat fixed output. The channel balance
between left and right channels is about 0.15 dB. The variable output can
change as much as 2 dB depending on where the level control is set. Frequency
response and distortion levels are the same on both outputs.

The bass phase and amplitude responses are about 20 times closer after the
upgrades."

With the upgrades (which cost over $500), this is one of the best tuners
available. It sounds rich, full and natural, with excellent sensitivity and
selectivity. The front panel is very clean, with just a few small nicks at the
very top edge, which are only noticeable up close. There are numerous scratches
on the underside of the tuner and, as shown in the photos, someone scratched
some letters and numbers on the rear panel. There also are a few nicks and
scratches on the top of the tuner. I've rated its condition conservatively.
Please see the photos I've included.
