Up for sale are my Antique Sound Lab DT200 Hurricane monoblocks. Highly rated and still considered one of the best high-power tube amps at its price point and even a better deal used. Harry Pearson of TAS initially ranked the stock version among the best power amps he ever heard. I am the original owner. They have been modified by Bill Baker of Response Audio in New York.  I’ve included most of the modification details below.  These are the brushed aluminum version. I’m reluctantly selling them as part of my continued downsizing.  I used these to power my Thiel 3.6s (already sold) and the whole system sounded amazing.  My new audio room is 11’ x 16’ x 10’. I’ve spent considerable time putting together a new lesser expensive system in a room that I had to acoustically treat.

The Hurricanes work very well with difficult loads like the Thiel 3.6s. The Hurricanes have great dynamics and the power to control the bottom end.   They have the tube midrange you’d expect and they have a wonderful top end. I can’t imagine a better deal if you’re in the market for a big tube amp or just a tube amp to drive a speaker with a demanding load.

All of the tubes test very strong on my tube tester.  The KT88s are Valve Art or Shuguang.  The input tubes (3 in each monoblock) are NOS Sylvania 6sn7 GTB chrome dome short bottles.

There is one small nick on the bottom edge of one of the faceplates.  It’s not obvious but I’ve pointed it out in one of the photographs.  Otherwise, they are in excellent condition.

I’ll include a copy of the Quick Start Manual provided by Bill Baker at Response Audio to help you install and bias the output tubes and to help you diagnose bad tubes.

These amplifiers cost $5000 new and the Response Audio mods cost $2000 for a total of $7000.  The new version of these amplifiers cost $7000 and many people prefer the version I have to the new version.  My asking price is now $2200.00.

Here’s the kicker. I don’t have the original boxes and these guys weigh 65lbs each so I can’t ship them.  As such, the buyer must pick them up in Austin Texas.  Auditions are welcome for serious buyers only.

Modifications:

1) All signal path coupling caps replaced with Auricap high quality non-inductive metalized polypropylene film capacitors - 20 pieces total (10 pieces per monoblock).

2) All resistors that made since to upgrade were replaced with Riken Ohm or Dale/Vishay resistors.

3) Common and 4-ohm speaker binding posts replaced with high quality 5 way binding posts.
