Incoming sound signals are used by the ear and brain for localization. In this case, an astonishing performance is achieved by evaluating level and phase differences of the signals arriving at the ear.
The localization can be disturbed by certain signal components. These are above all components which hinder the evaluation of a phantom sound source by not matching the signal itself or distorting it. This includes e.g. Jitter, which superimposes the original signal with frequency modulations. The brain is thereby additionally burdened, so that subtleties and details of the music are not perceived.
The unpleasant effect can be roughly compared with watching a 3D movie without 3D glasses.
