I’ve downsized my listening room with a move from a large house to a much smaller space so my trusty Platinum Audio Duos will have to go.

I am the original owner and I bought them new in 1998. At the time they retailed for $3795 for the pair and the stands were an additional $500.

I've been on Audiogon for several years but have never listed any of my gear before so you might have concerns about my lack of feedback on this site. I recommend that you look at my feedback on eBay going back 2 decades. You can find me under my company name: rfdesignassoc.

The copy below was written for eBay and I've included it for consistency though it might be overkill for this knowledgable group.

First a couple of words about the condition of the speakers…

They are pristine. They’ve always been stand mounted. Naturally, they lived in a pet, child and smoke free environment. As you can see from the photos they are in spectacular shape. The only “flaw” is that one of the spikes has a cracked cap as shown in the closeup. It was that way on day 1 when I removed them from the boxes. It wasn’t a big deal so I never contacted Platinum Audio for a replacement. The thick plexiglass top and bottom end plates are scratch free as are the logo buttons on the stands. Each stand has an embedded level between the two uprights. The stands are fillable. All the drivers are flawless as are the surrounds - the pictures show the actual condition. These 2 duos are the semi-matte finish Rosewood option which was an upcharge. I have all the original docs including a reprint of the review from Audio magazine dated May ’96.

The basic specs…

Frequency response: 40 Hz to 20 kHz +- 2 dB

Sensitivity: 86 dB at 1 watt/1meter

Impedance: 4 ohms

Dimensions: 21-1/2”H x 8”W x 13”D (excluding stands)

Weight: 26-1/2 lbs. (excluding stands)

Final thoughts…

If you’ve been around in the audio world for a few years you know the reputation of these speakers. They punch above their weight class. They are known for incredible tight base response and open, clean sound. That said, they do need quality power if they are to perform to their optimum. Over the years I’ve driven them with mono-blocks and conventional separates. In all cases they had plenty of power and were outstanding performers. Until the recent move I’ve been driving them with a Luxman L-507uX with surprising results considering that it’s rated for only 210W per channel into 4 ohms. Bottom line you’ll be good with a minimum 100W per channel of clean, quality power. The duos are considered a two and a half way speaker configuration as the lower woofer rolls off above 250Hz. In effect the lower woofer steps in to extend true base response as would a subwoofer. Also make sure your listening room is sized accordingly, These guys need about 4 feet from the side walls and a minimum 6 feet between so you’re looking at 14 feet wide. If your room is smaller they can move closer to the side walls provided separation is maintained at 6 feet. Though Platinum suggested that can move as close as 3” to the back wall I find they sound better if they are at least 14” out. The first page of the manual covers positioning but you will need to experiment to suit your space.

I think you’ll be very happy with the response, accuracy and condition of this pair of gently used and loved Duos.

Local pickup only as the shipping and packing on these is a deal killer. However I can work with a non-local buyer to meet half-way within a reasonable distance. Ask me first and we’ll discuss the options.

Rated 8/10 for age only.
