NAD C370 Amplifier with 3020 Phono Pre-Amp Audiophile Modification! One of a Kind This unit came in with the usual issues, bad protection ckt, multiple power supply cap failures, compromised components due to heat stress. We went through every cap on this unit and replaced all the caps in the +- 64v power supply control circuit as well as several others. This is a very powerful amp with a great build but poor design when it came to component layout. We have modified several areas of this amplifier, moving capacitors or other components that have shown historically to be failure points due to heat stress by way of component placement. Nichicon Gold, UKW and other high end audio capacitors were chosen based on their utilization in circuit.

If you are considering purchasing a piece of Vintage Gear such as this 15 year old NAD that is 'Working' but has not been bench tested/rebuilt, you are buying a ticking time bomb. Yes the price may be attractive but after the unit has been idle for years and you start exercising it, failure is just looming from bad caps, drifting component values and a plethora of other surprises hidden under the cabinet.

Buying one of our refurbished pieces is the closest thing to buying new, in many cases better because in the process of refurbishing we often select better components than the OEM since we don't focus on cost when doing these upgrades, we focus on performance. I often include the Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price and how that relates to the 'value' at todays dollar adjusted for inflation. When I work on a piece like this I realize why these pieces cost so much, we don't make products with this level of quality anymore.

Being addicted to vinyl, it saddened to see a manufacture such as NAD, who make perhaps the best mid-fi phono stage ever!, not to include phono in the integration of this amp. Hey, it was Y2K and all ... digital forever!!!!....not so much, bad move NAD. So, in respect to the medium and this amp definitely being worthy of being upgraded, we did a ground up rebuild of a Phono stage from a NAD 3020 design with Polypropylene Stacked Film component selection for the critical front end...But wait, there's more!... Sure, we could have slapped this into the cabinet just about anywhere and called it good but we purposely chose the path of least resistance and created a custom copper Faraday Shield to make this one of the quietest phono sections we have built to date, it is truly impressive how low the noise floor is! We plumbed the amp into a modified input that was originally called 'Disk", I felt that was appropriate. Special care was made to insure the owner can utilize the Moving Magnet or Moving Coil Selection.

The exterior is perfect 10/10,...ok 9.8 out of 10, call my lawyer ;) Performance is also 10/10, no mods to power amp itself as this is a strong performer on its own merits as many reviews will tell you.

This was a top pick award winning Amp under $1000 in 2002 The Audiophile Phono Stage itself will give any phono only pre-amp in the $1000 - $1800 price range a run for its money...and you get a great powerhouse of a amp that will do over 300 watts bridged!

Among the C370's more intriguing new design features are its Impedance Sensing Circuit, or ISC (patent pending), for its power-amp section. "This automatically adjusts the power supply of the C370 for maximum voltage or maximum current, depending on the speaker load seen by the output stage," explained Greg Stidsen, NAD's director of product planning. "Most moderately priced electronics run out of current early when presented with less than 8 ohms speaker impedance. They look good on the spec sheet, but they've got no balls. The C370 offers 120W continuous power into 8 or 4 ohms. But music demands short bursts of power, not a continuous drone. This is where the ISC gets interesting: IHF dynamic power (10ms toneburst) is 210W into 8 ohms, 340W into 4 ohms, and 450W into 2 ohms.
"The power supply of the C370 features a nice, big toroidal transformer, and the signal path employs very short signal routing, aided by switching inputs via relays (rather than sound-coloring CMOS transistors) and star grounding for lowest possible noise. Speaker switching is also via relay, which has the nice convenience benefit of activation via IR remote. We use lots of premium-quality parts—like 1% metal-film resistors and 2% film capacitors—where they make a difference in sound. The preamp and power-amp driver stages use NAD's own discrete class-A amplifier modules—high-current, low-impedance gain devices that contribute significantly to the excellent sound quality."
