This is not a subtle change from XP-20 to this XP-22; the changes can be heard in an impressive way. These do not come up often. I've owned a XP-10, have owned a XP-20, loved the detail, sound stage, presence,depth and the mids. The XP-22 just is the EVOLUTION of the product with more of what makes you want to listen. It has more detail, more control, lower noise floor, depth, presence in spades and the right amount of warmth to make this pleasurable, but not colored. Everything I liked about the XP-20 is increased, but with the character that made the XP-10 interesting; an overall better presentation. In short, most upgrades come within hairs of their prior siblings, The XP-22 makes you aware immediately. NOTE: Some have asked if this pre is so good then why would I sell it. LIke many of you I collect, use and then sell gear. "XP-22

The new design uses double shielded low noise toroidal transformers in external supply connected via aviation grade circular connectors using silver over oxygen free copper. The power supply is dual mono with two transformers with lower radiated and mechanical noise. Noise is the most prominent part of THD+N at low levels, so by lowering noise we get better resolution and dynamics.

The gain circuitry continues to use our favorite transistors from Toshiba but has a larger, higher biased, output stage like the Xs Preamp, and includes auto bias.

The larger output stage makes longer, and multiple cable runs easier to drive and gives us the advantage of simplifying our single ended output circuitry while increasing performance.

The volume control is a single stage instead of two stages and has more range it is quieter and more accurate. This the same volume control as used in the XP-30.

Overall this makes for a quieter more neutral, musical and versatile control center for your system.

To me, this pre sits at the top of the pile with some design and parts from the Pass Labs reference pre, the XS. The synergy of this amazing pre amp with a Pass Amp is stunning. Electronically this pre is a 9/10. There is what I would call a rub on the top right corner of the front at the angled edge; not a scratch. You would not notice it; and its not a scratch.
