If you like to play with tubes, you want a tester. If you want to buy boxes of them from garage sales or ebay, they are a must have; to see if the tube is any good or not. All testers will do that and many go beyond with much more complex and accurate readings for tube matching and critical circuits. This clean, retro Seco 107 was made by Seco Mfg in Minneapolis in the early 60's. ( Please look at the photos on zoom to appreciate the condition.) Touted at the time as the most complete tester available. Cost $139.50 in 1960. That was a lot of dough back then.
Ive used this close to two years now and have tested dozens of tubes. The "electron eye" makes 11 simultaneous grid circuit checks for leakage, shorts and grid emission. Tests for triode levels on the prewired chassis. Power tube output cathode emission tests on master chassis.
This is one of the nicest 107's you'll find. You don't see many anymore and they are usually beat to hell. In my book, people who beat up the outside, dont take proper care of the inside. The outside case is in great shape. Looks new from a few feet. Everything looks and functions nicely inside. I dont know when it was last calibrated, but the DMC seems to be close to other tester readings and almost always within ten percent on the triode halves. The eye gives confident immediate checks and will open quick, and sometimes slowly opens indicating a hard to detect leak or short trying to happen.
Original tube chart and operating manual explains how to test tubes and brochure outlines it's capabilities. I took a close photo so you can read it here.
Weighs about 15lbs so it will cost at least $25 to send and insure.
