Pioneer A400 integrated amplifier (recapped power supply & upgraded coupling caps)

Here is your chance to own a legendary Japanese amp that shook up the UK market (and was never released in the USA). Dig around the internet you will find that this was a 'NAD killer' and has a bit of a cult following to this day. 
In 2006 it came in 5th in Hi-Fi Choice's list of 50 most important hi-fi components ever sold in the UK. Hifi magazines compared it to much more expensive amps and called it a giant killer. It won the coveted Product of the Year by the What Hi-Fi magazine - an accolade that had never before gone to a Japanese company. 
In 2018 the Pioneer A400 made it into What Hi-Fi?'s list "The best 19 stereo amplifiers of What Hi-Fi?'s lifetime". What Hifi? wrote "Pioneer's A400 was so good that subsequent models never really recaptured its essence. With the A400 apt at producing excellent detail, agility and dynamics, it left rivals scratching their heads as their own attempts to match the Pioneer left them floundering. Even flanked by high-end sources and speakers, the A400 rose to the occasion. There weren't many budget components with such ability."
Some details about the unit for sale:
1) The main power filter caps were replaced with new low-ESR caps. 2) Coupling caps at the first stage of the amp were changed from electrolytic to film caps (WIMA brand) and capacitance was doubled which improved bass. 3) bias and offset has been adjusted as per manual. 4) two bipolar electrolytic coupling caps in phono signal path were swapped for Nichicon Muse bipolar caps. 5) Switches and pots have been cleaned. 6) All inputs have been confirmed and output has been lab bench tested in terms of both power and distortion. The amp is working perfectly.

A very neutral, high-fidelity 50W amp, that definitely sounds better after the tweaks. The amp has both MM and MC phono inputs, 2 tape loops, and 3 line level inputs (labeled CD, Tuner, Line). This is a UK model amp (240V and with UK plug) and I’m selling it together with an included separate step-up transformer to use in the USA. This model was only ever released in UK so you will not find a USA or other version.
