The Centenary Wagner Ring at Bayreuth raised an outpouring of howls and jeers due to the staging by Patrice Chéreau. What was "revolutionary" then now looks merely laughable. What was was lost, however, was a real appreciation of the musical side under the baton of Pierre Boulez. Often he's been accused of "rushing" the music, but if you look at the timings, you'll find that Böhm a decade earlier (and generally seen as a paragon interpretively) was actually faster. What really sets them apart, however, is what Boulez managed to do with the orchestra, and it sounds world-class in this Ring. It is strong vocally too with people like Hofmann and Altmeyer assuming roles more suited to their voices than was the case in other recordings they made. There's a very strong Wotan/Wanderer in Donald McIntyre, a decent Siegfried (Manfred Jung) and say what you will about her, Gwyneth Jones's involvement and stamina are impressive. As always at Bayreuth the other roles are superbly well handled. If you have the DVD's of this Ring and (understandably) turn off the video and play back the audio only, you will find that the sound on these CD's is VASTLY superior having been carefully remastered. This 12 CD box is the only time this Ring appeared in one complete package and is now long out of print, commanding some very high prices, if you can find it brand new as it is here.
