Up for your consideration is an Audio Research Reference 5 Preamplifier. The unit has been meticulously cared for and is in exceptional condition. I can find no dings or flaws on it. With one exception. It does have the more expensive plexiglass top plate that has a slight warp in the middle and you can see where it comes in contact with the unit itself. Nothing was ever placed on top of the unit and I didn’t notice it until I was taking pictures of it. All tubes are brand new.
Sonically, this was an enormous upgrade from my previous preamp. It does all the things you expect from a world class pre. It delivers incredible textured low end. The highs are gorgeous and the air between each instrument is completely uncluttered. But what it does best is resolution. It coaxes every last detail from the music and sets it solidly in a three dimensional sound stage. Personally I find so much of the beauty of music is in the details and boy does this thing give you details.

Included with the unit is all the original packaging, the AR screwdriver, the remote, the manual and the power cord.

| Which is the better, LS28 or ref5? How old is this amp? Thanks The reference equipment from AR is a major step up from their non-ref equipment. I used to own an LS27 and replaced it with the Ref 5 and was blown away at the improvement it made over the LS28. The unit was manufactured in 2012. I purchased it from the original owner (an owner of Ultra Fidelis Audio Salon) 5 years ago. |
