For sale is one of The Best DACs REGARDLESS of size and price that I have heard under $5k to date - and I have heard many! John Darko called the Hugo 2 “best DAC he’s ever used!” and puts it in his premier DAC league along with Chord DAVE ($12,000) and Aqua Formula ($17,000)! The Hugo 2 is 1-1/2 step up from the Original Hugo and one full step up from the original Hugo TT. I compared the Hugo 2 against my previous reference DACs – the Bricasti M1SE ($10,000) and PS Audio Directstream ($6000) with Huron and Red Cloud. The Hugo 2 produced better timing accuracy and separation, which are traits I deem most important when judging any DAC. There are plenty of “great” sounding DACs out there but not too many that are “correct” sounding. As a former mix engineer, I feel the Hugo 2 delivery is the closest to the “Studio” sound balance among the sea of DACs available today. I had a couple of recording engineer friends over and they both agree. 

I compared the Hugo 2 directly to my Chord DAVE – the result is not as far as one would think. The soundstage is slightly deeper the DAVE with tones slightly richer. The overall difference I can only described as extremely good (Hugo 2) vs extremely good plus (Dave). On the other hand, I feel the Hugo can sound a bit "cleaner", bass a bit "tighter" on some recordings. The Hugo 2 should compare favorably to just about any DAC under $5k. The only thing I have to mention is that you can’t use interconnects with large connectors such as Eichman bullit, but WTB, Audioquests and smaller connecters should fit nicely.

The best of BOTH worlds – Hugo 2’s headphone amp section is just as stunning. I use Focal Utopias and Audeze LCD-4s and Shure SE846s was equally satisfying. It’s a true reference headphone amp as well. The unit is “Portable”? It’s just too good to be true!
