This amplifier is a prototype that served as the basis for a limited run of monoblocks. The design is time tested and build is exemplary. Many high quality components are used throughout and are laid out in a thoughtful manner. The forgoing results in an amplifier with a clean, clear, open, life-like presentation.
This amplifier is constructed on a durable steel Hammond chassis completed with a custom fabricated bottom plate. The input RCA jackets are Cardas Rubidium types. There's also an IEC power inlet, power switch and binding posts. The tube sockets are ceramic. For the most part, the hardware is stainless steel save that for mounting the transformers and the unique transformer covers. The latter were required to allow for mounting the output transformer under the chassis and give the amplifier a bit of an art deco look.
The input stage is the low level section of the 6EM7 - very much akin to half of a 6SL7. This section is resistively plate loaded and biased using an LED. The plate and grid resistors are carbon comp types. The input stage is coupled to the output stage using an Angela Instruments copper foil paper in oil capacitor.
The output stage is the power section of the 6EM7 which may be thought of as an indirectly heated 2A3 and output power is thusly commensurate with that of a 2A3. The output transformer is an Edcor XSE15-8-5. This stage is self biased using parallel 620 ohm non-inductive wirewound Mills MRA-12 resistor bypassed with Panasonic TSHAs - no bias adjustment necessary. The grid resistor is a carbon comp.
The power supply makes uses of a surplus power transformer with separate B+ and filament windings. The rectifiers are the new CREE devices in a full wave bridge arrangement. The B+ filter is CLC with a Hammond choke and Panasonic TSHAs. Many feel that the TSHA rival Black Gates without the attendant hassle of break-in and having to run them daily. All in all, a low DCR arrangement that affords excellent dynamics and belies the actual power rating.
The price is basically placed at the cost of parts. So, you can save yourself the time and effort of building this amplifier - just connect it, plug it in, and enjoy.
