Pair of Altec 604-16HP . High Power variant of Altec 604. These came to me with a pair of Mastering Labs 604/5 dividing networks which are listed separately. Each of these speakers has at least one woofer cone flaw, but 604-16HP are exceedingly rare. These are very heavy dudes, each speaker weighs 32.2 pounds, for comparison the spec sheet for the Super Duplex 604 drivers mentions 26.75 pounds. Flaws: 604HP One: paper cone has two punctures and a gouge, multicellular HF horn corner chipped and HF diaphragm wire broken. 604HP Two: woofer surround perforated, HF diaphragm dinged. Due to these flaws these speakers are sold as-is and the buyer agrees they are Non-refundable. More photos on request.
These speakers are equipped with Tangerine phase plugs and per Great Plains Audio: "heavier cone a aluminum voice coil support and stiffer spider, the HF diaphragm was the higher power also with the symbiotic (sic. Maybe means "synthetic") material instead of aluminum.
Questions for the seller |

o you know of an elegant way to repair those rivers? Anyone work on them?
I found many threads on HiFi Asylum and Audiovgon on repairing paper cones by googling for paper speaker cone repair. Most involve patches saturated in one or another flexible adhesive and the reported results seem quite satisfactory. Likewise for repairing the fabric surrounds. Professional repair for old Altecs is available from Great Plains Audio. They purchased the rights and tooling to support classic Altec drivers and were my best source for info on these. |

Sid you receive my first response to this question?Utility repair seems pretty simple. Just google for "paper speaker cone repair." You'll get loats of videos and suggestions. The time-honored method of cone repair is to apply a lightweight paper or fabric patch saturated with glue. Many owners report successful DIYvrepairs so it's obviously not really difficult to get a good sounding result . Great Plains Audio offers Altec repair services, they are Altec factory and engineering alumni. Mike [email protected] |
