Beethoven, Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92, London FFSS CS-6093 Blue-Back, first edition. George Solti conducting The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
Beethoven’s Seventh and Eight Symphonies appeared in 1812, five years after the completion of the ‘Pastoral’. The Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh viewed as a whole see to make an important symphonic cycle: the fifth with its dramatic tension, the Sixth with its gental pastoral tranquility, and the Seventh with its irressible gaiety constitute a series that clearly indicates the scope of Beethoven’s imagination-an essay in human happiness written, in maturity, by one who had triumphed over an almost intolerable degree of suffering.
The clearest exposition of this delightful symphony is to be found in a performance of the work; its structure should not be isolated, like a blue-print. That in itself is afurther tribute to Beethoven’s skill, for he knew the secret of expressing profundity while holing our attention through sheer enjoyment of the music.
