This is a Benchmark DAC1 heavily modified by Steve Nugent at Empirical Audio for a cost of over $3,000. This unit has virtually every mod he used to offer for these including the upgraded headphone mod and the superclock upgrade.
You can use this for computer audio with the included Off Ramp I2S unit or you can connect to your stereo using the XLR, RCA and it has I2S, Optical and Coaxial inputs.
I bought this at the end of 2006 but hardly used it because I moved from NYC to New Zealand and sold my entire system except this because I was hoping to at least develop a computer based system but that didn't happen. Just the other day an audiophile coworker borrowed it and here is his email:
"Today I connected the DAC with an optical cable and some decent RCAs and played a few of my favourites CDs.
well... simply blissful!
Strangely enough, some of the tracks that usually sound the best, were not as sumptuous as I thought they would be, but instead the rest of the music got upgraded to the level of better sounding tracks.
Will let you know more as I get to know more about the main differences.
Thanks for letting me use this device."
Unit functions as new. Benchmark sells silver and black faceplates with and without rackmount if you wanted to change the look to suit your system.
SHIPPING: Buyer pays actual shipping costs but I will cover any costs over $50 unless special expedited shipping is requested.

Please note that I've been a member here since 2001 in case you are concerned about buying over the internet. If you are still concerned, I can give you my ebay username. I have been a member there before I was a member here and have over 400 positives with zero negatives.
(Note: I'm also willing to trade for interesting things non-audio related since I don't have a system anymore. I have a Canon DSLR and am always in need of lenses, filters and other photography gear. Let me know if you have ideas for trades and I'll respond.)
