THIS IS AN UPDATE AS OF 29 NOVEMBER
The CD-2 is gone, but the Welborne Labs analog/linear power supply is still available. Its effect on the sound of the CD-2 is transformative. Price includes shipping and is not negotiable, payment by cashier check or personal check after clearing. If you own the outstanding CD-2, you haven't heard it at its considerable best simply using the factory digital switching wall wart supply. Note the Welborne PSU does not come with an IEC power cord - use a good one from a reputable company (I use Belden 14/3 shielded AC cords, as good as most, better than some, and inexpensive).
END UPDATE
Have a large collection of red-book CDs? Then the bel canto e.One Series CD-2
top-loading transport + DAC + volume control “all in one” component is a must
have. Used as a transport, the digital
output via AES/EBU balanced (110 ohm) and BNC SPDIF single-ended (75 ohm, RCA adapter
included) is upsampled to 24/96. Used as a CD player the internal DAC runs at
24/192 through either fully balanced (4Vrms) or single ended (2Vrms) analog
outputs. The volume control function can
be switched on to drive an amplifier or powered speakers directly, or off to
feed full output to a preamp.
What makes this particular piece an even better sonic
performer is inclusion of a fully-regulated linear (analog) power supply (PSU) made
specifically for it by Welborne Labs (sadly, Ron Welborne has retired). While the original (included) digital
switching PSU sounded OK, the regulated analog PSU takes performance to a far higher
level.
The CD-2 retailed for $2995 and the Welborne Labs PSU for
$249, for a total list price of $3244.
Buy the pair for $1499 including shipping in the lower 48 states. Both products have seen only occasional use
since my entire music collection is ripped to an Olive 04HD server. Both pieces have been in my possession since
new in a smoke-, pet-, and child-free environment.
Note
that I also have a Welborne Labs PSU for the bel canto e.One Series DAC 1.5. I’ve sold the DAC 1.5 but the Welborne Labs
PSU is available – see my companion ad.
