Musical Fidelity kW SACD/CD
Player - Original Owner
I am converting my system to
a fully balanced configuration necessitating a new player that supports SACD/CD
with the requisite XLR connections. SACD
capability is important as I own many “pure” SACDs that do not contain the
hybrid layer for playback by CD. If you own some of these discs, gotta have
SACD playback capability!
The default for playback is
CD followed by SACD. This is the reverse
of the original programming, but reflects changes made by MF when the unit was
serviced and who replaced/refurbished the transport and laser assembly and
updated the firmware. Why they never
provided a manual toggle to pick which mode to use, who knows?? But that’s how it is. To my ear, it all sounds better than lots of
stuff costing 5-6x more.
It makes no sense to have the
kW SACD sitting unused, so off to Audiogon and a new home.
Since I intended never to buy
another player, essentially intending to use the MF for archival purposes and
SACD playback, I also acquired a spare kW laser assembly which I’m including
with the player. In addition, there is
also contact information for a German specialty shop that refurbs and rebuilds
or replaces MF transports and laser assemblies.
The unit is well built, no
plastic, or a lightweight....except for the remote. MF used the same core module for several of their units, so most, but not all, functions work as printed on remote. I can say it has given
me many hours of musical pleasure.
Do give it 1/2 hour to warm up...and listen as the sound goes from a bit distant and thin to close and warm.
Also Includes:
Special CD K622 Mozart
Clarinet Concerto by Antony Michaelson, Head of Musical Fidelity and a world
class clarinetist, recorded by John Atkinson, Editor of Stereophile. Sounds great through
either tube or solid-state output!
