IVES / Stokowski - "Orchestral Set 2" - London Phase 4 1968

"Charles Ives did not intend for his Orchestral Set No. 2 to be a follow-up to the famous first set, Three Places in New England. His notes indicate that by 1911 he'd completed the first two movements, and that the third was written in the fall of 1915. The finished grouping of these three movements wasn't assembled until 1919, whereas Three Places was put together around 1914. Ives' Orchestral Set No. 2 premiered under Morton Gould in Chicago in 1967.
The Orchestral Set No. 2 is scored for a very large orchestra and chorus, rivaling the scale of the Fourth Symphony." - AMG.

In 1961 London Records introduced Phase 4 Stereo, with promises to break "the sonic barrier." London was a well established American label owned by British Decca (not to be confused with American Decca) that specialized, not surprisingly, in releasing recordings from England.

Phase 4 Stereo: "New Scoring Concepts Incorporating True Musical Use of Separation and Movement. In this phase, arrangers and orchestrators re-score the music to place the instruments where they are musically most desired at any particular moment and make use of direction and movement to punctuate the musicality of sounds. The effect is more sound -- more interest -- more entertainment -- more participation -- more listening pleasure. Phase 4 albums quickly became known for their characteristic sound: warm, rich, clean, precisely performed, arranged and recorded.

This recording sounds 'Live' - you are there, right in front of the Orchestra. A big, powerful sound with room-shaking Bass, rich mids and open, transparent high's. The soundstage is huge and has solid imaging. Instruments are highly defined and have micro-detail. A truely magnificent pressing.
