"This performance of this suite, drawn by Tchaikovsky, preceded that of the ballet and was very well received for its clear form, lovely melodies, imaginative orchestration, and innocent spirit. The ballet itself did not initially fare well. But in the last half of the twentieth century it has become so popular as a Christmastime show that practically every ballet company produces it annually. The opening "Miniature Overture" has an inspired scoring: there are no bass instruments. (The lowest string instrument, for instance, is the viola.) The only other part of Act I in the suite is the March, originally depicting the boys of the household marching with their toy soldiers. "The Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy" is the most famous of all pieces featuring the then-new instrument, the celesta. "The Nutcracker Suite" was one of the compositions used in the classic Walt Disney animated feature "Fantasia." - AMG.

An exceptionally good pressing. Instruments are highly detailed and each have "air" and presence around them. The bass is deep, mid-range is sweet and the high's are "bell-like" and transparent. The level of micro detail captured clearly reveals musicians fingers sliding along the strings of bowed instruments and of others shifting in their chairs!. A great performance and a superior recording.
Very faint surface noise and an occasional "tick".
