conrad-johnson CA200 integrated amp [Expired]
The CA200 was included in the “Cost No Object” integrated amplifier section of the 2009 The Absolute Sound Buyer’s Guide. This is the classification above “The Best”. It and the Pass Labs INT-150 were the lowest priced integrateds in that category. In the Buyer’s Guide description of the CA200 Neil Gader concluded, “Separates will buy you greater flexibility and low-end slam, but there isn’t much out there to surpass the CA200’s finesse.” The CA200 is rated at 185 wpc into 8 ohms.
The 7 rating is for a light scratch on the top of the faceplate (see photo). It is hard to see in normal light. The remote has a ding on the edge (see photo).
It also has a mechanical transformer hum. That is, the hum comes from the transformer itself not through the speakers. Normal ambient noise such as my refrigerator and heating/air conditioning are louder. So is the cooling fan on my Oppo BDP-95. You can't hear it if music is playing. It has not gotten louder in the time that I have owned the amp.
I have checked with c-j and they told me they have replacement transformers but that the ones they have would probably be louder than mine.
It is not a beat up amp. It looks very nice in spite of the 7 rating. It is a very good deal if the hum is not a problem for you.
Reason for selling is that I bought separates so that I could use a tube preamp.
