Concert Fidelity DAC-040BD battery powered tube DAC. I purchased this DAC new from Audio Archon 3.5 years ago. This was purchased as a BD model. it is not an older version that was upgraded. It was sent back to Japan for the latest battery charging circuit. This is the latest version and one of the best sounding DAC's ever made. Several audio reviewers and a studio use this DAC as a reference.
Here are a few quotes from Steve Hoffman, Dick Olshner, and Terry London. Steve Hoffman wrote about the original DAC-040, " The Concert Fidelity DAC-040 tube digital to analog converter is in constant use in my studio now. The unit arrived fully broken in and from the first note, I could hear my digital playback open up, bloom and sound so glorious that I spent the afternoon just listening to all my favorite old compact discs in my studio instead of getting any work done. I highly recommend the Concert Fidelity DAC-040 to anyone who wants to radically improve their digital playback! "
Dick Olsher wrote about the original DAC-040, " At the end of the day I have to confess that I'm unable to resist the DAC-040's siren call. Vivid harmonic colors, superb rendition of instrumental colors, and an analog-like presentation that draws the listener into a spacious and solid soundstage. Zero oversampling truly is a gateway to a kinder, gentler, and ultimately more musical digital experience. It's hard to believe that a NOS Phillips multi-bit chipset can be engineered to put current 24bit/196Hz Delta Sigma DAC's to shame, at least in musical terms. "
Terry London's review of the newer DAC-040BD stated, " I was quite content having the Concert Fidelity DAC-040 as my reference for many years. It produced music with natural and gorgeous timbres/tonality, created a large and accurate soundstage with excellent layering and placement of individual players, and was the least digital sounding digital to analog converter I had ever heard. After listening to many highly regarded DAC's I found that, while I admired a few of the individual DAC's for their sonic abilities, they all sounded like very good digital reproductions. They did not produce the illusion of real music that would relax and draw me into the music the way the Concert Fidelity did. Surprisingly, The new DAC-040BD offers significant improvement over the previous generation. I trusted that Mr. Tsuda would never come out with a new generation of his DAC unless he thought he could improve it's performance. However, to take all the beauty of the DAC-040 to a much higher level and add even more image density/three -dimensionality was something I didn't expect could be done in the digital reproduction of music. The DAC-040BD has taken a significant step toward creating the illusion of real music, something that advocates for analog music reproduction have always claimed to be missing in digital reproduction. It should come as no surprise that at the end of the auditioning process, I bought the demo unit. "
I owned the original version of the DAC and sold it for a top rated/solid state $15,000 DAC. I sold the solid state $15,000 DAC within a month and purchased this Concert Fidelity 040BD new from an authorized dealer. For me to buy another DAC that will outperform the 040BD, it will cost a minimum of $22,000. I've auditioned many in my system recently and that's my conclusion. No low offers please.
I have the original box, packing material and manual. Thanks for looking!
