The Bryston BDA-2 is a state of the
art external Stereo DAC (digital to analog converter) which delivers superb
sonic performance through re-sampling and re-clocking of the digital input
signal. The BDA-2 incorporates a new asynchronous USB input capable of
192/24bit resolution. It is compatible with CD Drives, Sound Cards, Computers,
Music Servers, etc.
Inputs: USB Class 2, 4x SPDIF (2
BNC, 2 RCA), 2x Optical (TOSLINK), AES/EBU
Outputs: RCA Single Ended, XLR Balanced, SPDIF Bypass (RCA)*
Control: RS-232 (DB9)**
Features:
- Dual 32Bit AKM DAC's
- Discrete Class A analog output stage
- Independent analog and digital signal paths
- Independent dual power supplies
- Synchronous upsampling (176.4K/192K)
- Oversampling
- 44.1, 48, 88, 96, 176, 192K Sampling
- 16-24Bit, 44K-192K PCM and USB
The
most notable new feature added to the BDA-2 is an asynchronous USB input
capable of handling all standard sample rates up to 192kHz, replacing the
“convenience feature” adaptive USB input of the BDA-1. Bryston’s USB
implementation aims to be state-of-the-art, featuring proprietary firmware
running on the XMOS USB Audio micro-controller platform. Whereas the BDA-1
utilized a pair of time-tested 24-bit Crystal CS4398 DACs, one per channel in a
dual-differential configuration, the BDA-2 has been upgraded with the latest
top-of-the-line 32-bit AKM 4399 DACs. The BDA-2 features Bryston’s venerable
discrete Class A analog output circuitry, rather than off-the-shelf IC op-amps.
The BDA-2 has excellent input flexibility, with two TosLink optical, two RCA,
and two 75-ohm BNC SPDIF inputs, and a balanced AES/EBU input. Both
single-ended RCA and balanced XLR analog outputs are offered, as well as a
convenient RCA SPDIF pass-through digital output.
An
outstanding DAC, loved the sound from this DAC, Stereophile and Absolute Sound
recommended component when new. In my opinion, not much difference between the
BDA-2 and the BDA-3.
