These are the fairly rare AMT Towers with 10" drivers and ported transmission line cabinets not the much more common AMT 1D "pyramid" speakers with 12" drivers.
I am the second owner of these ~1981 speakers. When I got them in 2002 I did a lot of cosmetic work to them to restore them.
-I sent the drivers to ESS (in Sacremento at the time) to have the surrounds replaced and the voice coils & cones checked. So the drivers were like new in '02.
-I stripped, stained, and refinished the wood on the top (I wish I'd done the bottom as well but...)
-The cloth was faded and crappy looking (low wife acceptance factor) so I replaced it with "acoustically transparent" black cloth for a more modern look.
-I replaced the binding posts with new ones that work with thicker gauge wire than the originals.
-The crossovers had some minor damage from moving so I secured the coils back on the board and touched up some of the solder joints.
These speakers are in great condition cosmetically except for the wood at the bottom which shows some signs of wear since I didn't refinish it.
They sound amazing! I've never heard anything like these AMT's. The sound projects in all directions with an amazing clarity. Listening to other speakers that are <$3000 they just sound muddy and muted in comparison. The Heil Air Motion Transformers (AMT) are like nothing else for high and mid range tones and the transmission line cabinet gives the bass more punch than you'd expect from a 10" woofer.
I'll never forget when I listened to these for the first time. I was in my garage and fired up the speakers to see how it would sound with the woofer repaired. I heard this terrible rattling at a moderate volume and walked around the towers trying to locate the source. It took me a couple laps before I realized that it was the bass rattling the garage door in its tracks and had nothing to do with the speakers. :)
I have four of these monster speakers (about 4' tall and 70lbs each). I learned long ago that having all four in one room was too much. These are a labor of love but I just can't justify keeping four of them so I'm putting two of my babies up for sale.
For kicks, and because I'm a bit of a pack rat, I even have the original manuals (cheesy photocopies), product warranty cards, and receipts from ESS for the woofer repairs.
