Shahinian Acoustics Obelisk Updated Classic

The Shahinian Obelisk was a very radical design in 1977 when first conceived by Richard Shahinian but was soon accepted for its extraordinary performance due to its poly/omnidirectional design. I remember when I first heard them in the D.C. area in 1983, I was so impressed that I had to have them even at $1,500 which was very expensive for a pair of speakers back then. Frp, ,u 2012 price list, they now sell for $7,700. i was entertained by them until 1988 when my work took me out of the U.S. until 2002. During that time they were stored in the original boxes under the stairs in a finished basement.

Fifteen years later when they were taken out of the boxes, I discovered that the foam rubber surrounding the cones of the bass drivers and passive radiators had deteriorated. A common issue with almost any foam surround of any manufacturer of that era. I put them back in the boxes and back in the closet and bought new speakers. Over the years I considered repairing them but it was not til 2011 that I contacted Shahinian, still on Long Island but with a new street address due o the expansion. Richard was still there but I dealt with his son Vasken who was very helpful and friendly and he instructed me to send them back to them for reconstruction with new drivers and whatever other components would bring the Obelisks back to their original specifications. This is what I did and they were amazed that I still had the original boxes.

At Shahinian both bass drivers and both passive radiators were replaced with the latest components. Four of the midrange drivers were replaced with New Old Stock drivers but Vasken recommended not replacing the tweeters because the range of the original tweeters was 22kHz while the newest version is 18kHz. They also installed new grill cloths and Pyramid at no cost. The Bill: $1,400. So there you have it: virtually new Shahinian Obelisks with no dents, scratches, or chips and operating at original factory specifications.

Power handling: 200W; Frequency response: -3dB/28hz - 22kHz; Nominal Impedance: 6 ohms; Sensitivity: 89 dB; Weight: 50 lbs. They have been played infrequently since they are presently not in my main system.

That is a write up from the original owner. All his stuff has been perfect condition, no pets, non smoker, no kids. 9/10 for age.

These speakers are a real Gem. They remind me of MBL and German Physik speakers. The image can be razor sharp in the sweet spot but the present excellent sound and imaging throughout a room. Fantastic in a space where you might entertain.
