Legendary Wilson Audio Watt Puppy 7 Speakers in rare color NY/NJ/CT

Up for grabs is a legendary pair of Willson Audio Watt Puppy speakers. For most of my life, these where on my holy grail and unattainable list, mostly because of the roughly $25k list price and small manufacturing numbers.

These particular pair are the series 7 which it the second to last they made. I believe production stopped at 8 and the series became a one piece speakers, most likely due to a lower manufacturing cost. There were no dramatic improvements from the first series to last series but rather incremental improvements. In my opinion the series 7 and 8 are the ones you have, mostly because they have the improved woofer martial surround which does not age and deteriorate over time.

Since you’re already reading this I’m not going to spend a lot of time discussing the sound quality as you already know. I can certainly vouch for both the clarity of the high end and the fullness and control of the low end.

Setup of the speakers in the room is a bit involved but its certainly not hard. There is a chart on the top of the base unit that illustrates him much tilting the top speaker will require with regards to the listening distance. While I doesn’t seem to make a huge difference in my opinion, the designers seem to think otherwise.

One of the real benefits of these babies is the fact that they can be driven to very loud levels with as little as 30W. Ive gotten great results with simple solid state Naim amplifiers at 35W on one end of the spectrum and 300W Spectral mono blocks on the other.

The one think I don't particularly care for is the speaker binding posts on the bass units. They do not accept bi-wire or even bananas. You have to use single spade terminations this limiting the choice of speaker cables, particularly if you have a pair sitting around that you’d like to use. I suppose you can bi-wire by running one set of cables to the bass unit and the other to the treble/mid unit thus eliminating the jumper cable that comes with them which is called the tail.

This set comes mostly complete including all the manuals, tools, variety of spikes and even the gloves. It does include grills but I've removed the Velcro since it is ugly and I like to use these without the grills. I've order new Velcro and will gladly put it back if you intend on using the grills. In my opinion these look better with the drivers exposed. They also include a set of non Wilson custom lockable casters which are incredibly handy since each speaker assembly weighs in over 120lbs.

The color is a medium metallic gray/silver which is pretty rare. Not sure if it was custom at the time. The drivers are in absolute 100% condition, while the paint is perfect everywhere with the exception of an small peeled area on the top of one of them which is visible in the pictures but not a few feet away. The midrange drivers feature a carbon paper pulp. Many have asked and yes, the drivers are supposed to look like that with the irregular paper bumps and fibers. These are amazing drivers.

Im going to list these as local pickup only because of their weight and lack of crates. But you can arrange to have them picked up.

Speakers are available for pickup and audition at my listening room in Ridgewood NJ with a variety of electronics. They are also available for pickup only at my office in NYC (Union Square) if its easier for you than NJ. High end trades welcomed.

PS. I will deliver these bad boys within 50miles of 07450 and set them up free of charge.

Here is what Stereophile concluded in a lengthy positive review.

Conclusions
The Wilson Audio WATT/Puppy 7 is a speaker you can both respect and love with ease. It goes low, plays loud, responds quickly, and sounds delicate, detailed, and vivid. It is rhythmically lithe and dynamically expressive, and it projects an impressively large, dramatic, room-filling picture. After the $41,500/pair Rockport Antares, the $22,400/pair WATT/Puppy 7 is the most open, least congested speaker I've heard.

I've been told that the various WATT/Puppy iterations over the years have vacillated between soulless perfection and soulful compromise, stopping everywhere between. I can't speak about the WATT/Puppy 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6, but I can about the latest edition: The 7 has both soul, and, I'll bet, superb technical performance. While its frequency response appears to have been altered from strict flatness to add layers of love in the midbass and high frequencies, the WATT/Puppy 7 has so may positive attributes and so few negative ones that I do not hesitate to say that it's one of the finest-sounding and -performing speakers I have had the pleasure to evaluate. It does just about everything you could want from a speaker of any size. Is it "perfect"? No. But it's surely good enough!
