Harbeth Super HL5 speakers in mint condition, gorgeous cherry wood, drivers perfect, legendary sound, accurate and musical.
I am the original owner. I bought these speakers from an authorized Harbeth dealer on December 1, 2011, shortly after moving to a house with a big space that was intended to be a large listening room. That room, however, is being put to a new purpose, so I’m back to a smaller space that doesn’t do justice to these superb speakers.
The pictures are taken in indoor daylight without flash. I did not want to risk taking the speakers outside, since they’re in beautiful shape, and I want them to stay that way for the next owner.
Also available, as you can see in some of the pictures, is a pair of Foundation stands made for the Super HL5s. The manufacturer explains: “Foundation speaker stands are made specifically for Harbeth speakers and are tuned to work with the ‘lossy’ box design that Harbeth employs. The fully welded, open frame stand allows full resonance of the base of the speaker while providing an exceptionally rigid foundation.” I will offer the buyer of the speakers first option on buying the stands for $200, which is about half of what they cost (with shipping) from the Canadian distributor (Planet of Sound). I will not consider selling the stands separate from the speakers until after the speakers have sold (if they sell without the stands).
I’m in central Virginia and I prefer a local sale. I’m willing to drive a hundred or so miles to deliver or meet a buyer. For delivery, a buyer must pay ten percent down by PayPal, and the balance in cash upon delivery.
If no local buyer emerges, I’ll consider shipping these speakers -- US-48 sales only. They will be double-boxed and insured, and the buyer pays shipping. Two boxes for the speakers, about 50 lbs each, and a third box for the stands.
These speakers are like new. I'm willing to listen to reasonable offers, but please do not submit lowball offers. Please check my feedback for assurance of a quality product and smooth transaction. Preference to Audiogoners with a record of positive feedback.
From a review in the Stereo Times: “Never, at any price or design type, have I heard a speaker that so completely got out of the way and let the music speak for itself. Never have I heard a speaker that exceeds the HL5’s ability to reveal the artistic quality of the music and its performance. Never have I heard a speaker that does so many of the fundamentals of music reproduction so right: timbre, rhythm, phrasing, articulation, parsing, dynamic flow, sound stage reconstruction, placement of instruments, and the delineation of the ambience of the recording site are all produced with an ease and naturalness so convincing and so adept at evoking musical gestalts that immersion into the music was as easy as breathing.”
From a review in The Absolute Sound: “The midrange of the SHL5 is its glory. To my ears, the Harbeth mid/bass driver, made of its proprietary RADIAL material, is the best dynamic midrange driver there is, and it surely sounds that way here. (This is actually a new generation of the RADIAL material, which is supposed to be even smoother than the driver in the original Compact 7, and it surely is smooth, indeed.) Human voice is triumphantly reproduced, and instrumental midrange timbre is close to flawless.”
