Jazz fans all over the world can hear the same reactions of the German audience to Ella’s tour de force in much the same fashion that one hears American audiences on Jazz At The Philharmonic albums with Ella recorded in America. As you can tell, the title of the album comes from the song of the same name. And this was the first time Ella sang ‘’Mack the Knife,’’ and not knowing the lyrics to well she substituted her own, for what may well have been an improvement on the original. Ella is accompanied on this album by Paul Smith, piano; Jim Hall, guitar; Wilfred Middlebrooks, bass; Gus Johnson, drums.
