JJ Johnson JJ Johnson HQ Japanese pressing CBS/SONY PCPA 608
Containing 7 tracks from the same session that includes pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Max Roach. This reissue also contains music featuring drummer Elvin Jones on 3 tracks; 4 tracks with drummer Max Roach aalongside Johnson. All of the music is excellent, and shows why Johnson was regarded as the very best jazz trombonist in the bop and post-bop movements. On Blue Trombone, the bright piano playing of Flanagan is front and center especially on the opener, "Done With The Wind," while Roach's distinctive drumming, as heard on the long introduction of "Kev," elevates the session. There's a freewheeling feeling to Johnson's playing, noticeable on the two-part title track, loose and easy, and completely unforced no matter the tempo. Paired with Mobley, Johnson's focus is more a match for the tenor's energy on "Kev," where the band is truly having a ball swinging hard. Then there's the deep blue "So Sorry Please'," concentrated in a different, patient manner inspired by the tinkling piano of Silver. The single tracks with Little and Jones or Silver, Chambers, and Clarke are relaxed and cool, though the bassist may be a bit more assertive than the others. With the musicianship at such a high level, this has to be considered -- along with First Place -- as some of J.J. Johnson's best early work, aside from his collaborations with Kai Winding and his initial Blue Note label efforts.
