"From a rock or pop listener's perspective, this is inarguably Lewis' most essential material. This 18-song double album has all four of his Top 40 hits from 1965-1966 ("The "In" Crowd," "Hang on Sloopy," "A Hard Day's Night," and "Wade in the Water"), as well as various other cuts from 1961-1966 LPs and singles, dominated by covers of popular Motown, R&B, and pop songs. Its unabashed pop-friendly approach isn't going to impress serious jazzbos, but then, Lewis wasn't pretending to make serious art during this period. He aimed to stake out some pleasant jazz-R&B-pop grooves with good hooks, and -- with the help of sidemen like drummer Maurice White (later in Earth, Wind & Fire) and the rhythm section of Eldee Young and Red Holt (soon to form the similar Young-Holt Unlimited) -- he succeeded." - AMG
