This is a new 10 out of 10 Jolida JD-9A with the latest Maryland build.
Comes with Tung-Sol tubes (which improve the sound significantly), AD37 opamps throughout, higher quality output coupling caps.
I am a professional audio repair person in the business for over 45 years and have repaired, built and modified a tremendous of gear over the years. I took this apart to see why it was sensitive to RF pickup (all Jolida's are) and found three things that could be improved upon....
1) the RCA input jack grounds were soldered together right at the jack....a big no-no, as it affects interaction between channels...I separated them.
2) R-F bypass of the shield to chassis was not done right at the jack, but over at the board where it isn't as effective....adding two bypass caps right at the input cut down R-F sensitivity by 3 times (this will also improve the sound as you will have less grunge riding into the unit); part of the same reason people spend $1000 on a power cord)
3) From the factory, the input shielded cables were dressed so they touched the chassis, effectively making a capacitor with the cable shield and chassis. The effect of this was very pronounced microphonics when tapping on the input connectors....redressing these cables COMPLETELY eliminated that.
While at it, I also redressed the input and output cables from the tubes and tightly twisted the transformer leads (reduces radiated noise). Also, the LED on these can blind you it is so bright. I increased the series resistor so it is much more pleasant now.
All in all, these changes made a QUIT NOTICEABLE improvment in the soundstage/imaging, micro dynamics.
This is a fantastic preamp with unbelievable gain. It can handle ANY low output moving coil cartridge with no problems. Sound is way beyond what something this inexpensive should sound.
The Jolida JD-9 series has gone through a number of improvements over the years. The most recent production units have several improvements (tubes, op-amps, output coupling caps, main board layout, replacement of output board trim pot with low noise resistor network (better sound on low outputs). Most of the reviews you read are of the older units...the newer ones sound MUCH better. With the changes I made, this goes up another level.
Pay Pal add 3%.
