Garrard 301 Compact Dual Tonearm Plinth in Wenge by Woodsong Audio

From the sweeping grain of this amazing Wenge, to the years of development in the core design, to the total integration of all aspects of this plinth, this piece is a true work of art.

Wenge is a very hard, and beautiful wood which is sourced from Africa. This particular Wenge came from a board that, when I saw the sweep in the grain, it was immediately obvious that it was perfect for this plinth design. There are a few sets remaining of this beautiful grain pattern. I love the sweep, down from the sides, balanced, into a swoop that meets in the center of the front of the plinth. Notice how the grain of the top of the plinth blends right in to the grain of the front. When properly finished, Wenge is one of my favorite woods, aesthetically. It is extremely difficult to photograph well, and really show the level of finish, and true beauty of the finished piece. The dark grain of Wenge, in the signature Woodsong Audio, highly polished oil finish, is literally as smooth as window pane glass. In some cases not quite as, but in some cases, smoother than glass, depending on the exact piece of wood. The finish is polished to perfection, truly amazing, and in a way that polished clear coats just cannot match. It is 'otherworldly'..... extremely beautiful.

This plinth is finished in solid Wenge which is sliced and freshly surfaced 'in house' at the time of use. This is not the paper thin commercially supplied veneer which is used by others, which has a tendency to be more 'washed out' in color, and offer insufficient thickness for refinishing, should any damage ever occur.

This plinth design utilizes articulating armboards, which allows for a smaller footprint, clean tonearm cable routing, ease of precise adjustment, and also ease of changing tonearms, should you desire. Armboards can frequently be cut to mount 2 or more different tonearms, each. Indian Rosewood is our default material for articulating armboards, though Ebony is an option, as well as Bronze, Panzerholz, Maple, Wenge, or really, about anything you want to try. This is the beauty of articulating armboards. Of course, we also offer plinths with plinth mounted, fixed armboards, and like them as well.

Plinth measures 20" wide, by 16" deep, by 4.25" tall ( not including footers) making this one of the smallest Garrard plinths available, yet still having a weight of around 35lbs.

This listing is for the plinth and Stillpoints Ultra 5 footers only. The 301 motor unit, tonearms, and cartridges are not included. Track Audio Isolation devices are available as an option to the Stillpoints Ultra 5 footers at a substantial reduction in price.

Included in the price of this listing are, the plinth, 4 polished stainless slot head screws which match the original hardware supplied with the 301, 2 armboards cut to your tonearm choice, a wiring harness and installation kit, and 4 Stillpoints Ultra 5 footers.

Our high mass CLD plinth design has been developed over the past 10 years, to have just the right amount of damping to minimize resonance within the plinth, without being over damped. Too much damping, say, in the case of a plinth made predominantly, or completely from some composites, and the music will sound dull, with little air. Too little damping, like with a plinth made only from hardwood (layers or solid), and issues with resonance can arise, creating potentially serious problems for more sensitive arm / pickup combinations. Again and again, positive customer feedback reinforces that we are doing something right!
