Highly Modified Magnepan MG-1.7 Speakers. Custom 150 pound dampened steel Sound Anchors frames and bases. Custom cross-overs with matched AuraCaps, Alpha Core (Goertz) Ribbon chokes, and Furutech carbon fiber binding posts. Custom wooden shipping crates for frames/panels.

I've been told by Magnepan dealers and people that have owned highly modified Maggies that these are the best sounding pair of Magnepan speakers they've ever heard.

They compared favorably to or beat the performance of any speaker you could name for under $20,000.  Real giant killers.

We took these speakers to the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest in 2015 and our room was awarded "Best Sound (for the money)" by Dick Olsher of The Absolute Sound (awards at bottom):

The secret is the 150 pound frames and bases custom made for us by Sound Anchors. Made from HEAVY gauge 3" x 1.5" rectangular cross-section steel and dampened with Sound Anchor's proprietary fillers.

Even the panels are clamped in place with high-density foam to minimize unwanted resonance. Note panel clamps are easily removed with an Allen wrench (see photo).

Heavy adjustable spikes in the base allow not only "leveling" the bases, but also allow you to fine tune the forward "tilt" to provide optimal focus for your listening position.

These frames are SOLID and MASSIVE not only giving these MG-1.7s incredible bass extension and solidity, but also bringing the top end into focus unlike you've ever heard from any Magnepan speaker. The coherency, depth, and image is frightening.

Don't bother asking: Sound Anchors made this one set...they lost $$$ on it...and they won't make another set for any price (too big for their shop).

Note that the cloth covers are stock Magnepan covers stretched over the frames. They look quite good, but still have some holes in the rear where the stock binding posts used to be (see photos). You could order replacement covers from Magnepan.

For transport we custom made wooden crates for the frames/panels (see photo). The crates alone cost over $350 in materials and over 30 hours of labor.

Between the stock Magnepan MG-1.7s, custom Sound Anchors frames/bases, custom cross-overs, and crates we have about $7,000 invested into these one-of-a-kind beauties.

Condition is as shown in the photos. There are a few scratches and chips in the black finish of the frame, but all in all I would give them 8/10 in terms of condition.

We will deliver and set up within 100 miles of Albuquerque, New Mexico as well as offering a 1 year in home warranty and service policy (what more could you want?).

Longer distance set up and maintenance contracts available.

Shipping to any other place will be a bit on the expensive side ($300-$500?) and will require a trucking vs. a package carrier. You can set up transport yourself or we'll charge you the exact price the carrier charges us.

Due to the weight and delicacy of this item we can not accept returns, but if for some reason if either or both panels arrive damaged, we will refund 100% of the cost for Magnepan to rebuild/repair the panels. Note the panels are much easier to remove and ship than the stock MG-1.7 speakers.

Also included will be any or all of the stock MG-1.7 frames, bases, cross-overs, packing, etc. All you would have to pay is the additional shipping.

Also included will be a ribbon repair kit we purchased from Magnepan that works quite nicely (we can teach you how to use it) and enough of the high-density foam that sandwiches the panels in our custom frames to do a 100% replacement in the future.

Aside from all that, I can tell you that we've had dozens of customers audition these Maggies in our demo room and they all leave drooling with their jaws on the floor ;-)

Questions for the seller
Can I ask how you have $7k invested in these? Can you break that down please?
Stock MG-1.7s = $2,350. Prototype Sound Anchors frames/bases = $2,500 + $450 shipping. Cross-over capacitors about $600. Cross-over ribbon chokes about $100. Furutech carbon fiber binding posts about $450. Hardwood and high-density foam for reusable custom shipping crates about $350. Then add to that over 100 hours of labor I paid out at $50/hour to electronics techs that work for me who assisted in the assembly and testing, and the total is considerably over the $7,000 quoted. If we or another company decided to manufacture and sell these they would have to retail for well over $10,000. Of course the price tag would not be an issue...they sound amazing for twice that price. The problem is the WEIGHT. You need two strong men to move each frame in it's crate and to assemble the frames to the bases ;-)
what is the freq. range?
The same as a stock pair of MG-1.7s...they have an honest and solid 40Hz and go up to a crisp and clean 30KHz or so. FR is only one small piece of the puzzle. You can have lots of loose, crappy, low bass and harmonically incoherent highs and have a FR of <10Hz to >40KHz. What makes these Maggies SO impressive is that they don't move or resonate like stock ones or most of the light weight Maggie upgrades. When the diaphragm goes in/out ONLY the diaphragm goes in/out as opposed to action/reaction and the entire panel moving opposite to the phase of the diaphragm causing out of phase, out of time, and out of tune info throughout the frequency range as happens with any stock Maggies. Does that make sense?
Are the speakers set up for listening at this time? I live in Midland TX & will be at my place in Taos the week of Aug 15. I would like to audition them some day that week, if possible. Thanks MBrown
Yes and no. The speakers are set up, but some of the electronics that are used for them are in another system. Given a day or two notice, I can have the entire system set up.
Does the original 1.7 (frame and all)clamp into the sound anchor stands ... and if so are the stock maggie 1.7s removable? Or is the mylar panel removed from the stock frame? Thanks!
If you look closely at the photos you'll see how the 1.7's driver panels (aluminum frame + Mylar + magnets) is clamped into the high-density foam dampened custom frame. This not only insures minimal movement and resonance (the stock Maggie frame is cheap wood and staples), but also allows these frames to be slightly narrower than the stock ones, resulting in more pin-point imaging.
