28BSST² Single-Channel (Mono) Amplifier - FAQ 🎶

Why isn't the 28BSST² rated at 4 Ohms?

The 28BSST²’s power is not officially rated at 4 Ohms
because its internal breaker is rated at 12 Amperes or 80% of the
carrying capacity of the power cord, as required by law. This works out
to 1440 Watts from the wall plug and the 28BSST² will deliver over 2000
Watts continuous into 4 Ohms. For musical purposes, the average power to
the speakers would be far less than that level, so the breaker will not

open.

The current into 8 Ohms measures 15.8 Amperes peak,
or a bit over 11 Amps continuous at 1000 Watts. Of course the 28BSST² is
actually capable of more than 1000 Watts into 8 Ohms. At clipping,
around 1350 Watts the current is 18.5 Amps peak, 13 Amps continuous.
Into 4 Ohms those figures would be higher, close to twice as high,
especially under musical conditions. That is never a problem because the
28BSST² is capable of over 100 Amperes peak and 32 Amperes continuous
when the breaker is bypassed under lab conditions.

Incredibly Detailed and Musical Drive

A significant part of the design criteria for the 28B SST2
was to develop a very powerful amplifier that would drive any speaker
on the planet but maintain an ideal power curve at 1 watt as well as at
1000 watts and every power level in between. Most amplifiers exhibit a
power curve whereby the best noise floor, drive capability and
distortion are maintained from about 1/3 power and up.

The Bryston 28B-SST2 Mono amplifier
maintains its power curve right from the first watt. This results in a
hugely powerful amplifier that sounds incredibly detailed and musical at
very low levels and maintains that same sophistication and drive
capability with even the most difficult, inefficient speakers, large or
small.

The Bryston 28BSST2 was honored by being included in The Absolute Sound 2012 High-End Audio Buyer's Guide.
According to the magazine, "Out of the box and with no warm-up at all,
this pair of 1000W (!) monoblocks greatly impressed HP. The two top
octaves were unusually sweet for solid state. Tubed gear can achieve
such naturalness on top, but not usually this clearly and purely."

In fact, Stereophile was so impressed with the 28B SST2 that it honored the amp with a 'Class A' listing in its coveted "Recommended Component" listing for 2009 and 2010.

"Lower Noise Floor Than Any Other"

"The noise floor is lower than any other amplifier in my experience," notes Harry Pearson in his January 2009 review for The Absolute Sound
magazine. "And the power output pretty much makes ridiculous the idea
that this amp will clip at any less than a deadly listening level."

And what about the difference between the original model SST and the new SST2? In the March 2010 issue of The Absolute Sound, the 28BSST2

absolutely no edge or enhanced 'definition'; indeed, it sounds much

Designed for Performance and Realism

The Bryston 28B-SST2 is a fully balanced
output amplifier, which has reduced THD and IMD to unprecedented low
values, (typically 0.001% or less), for a new degree of transparency,
musicality and ease of listening. Superbly low noise floor, typically
below – 115 dB, yields an inky black silence between notes for
hauntingly realistic reproduction. Tremendous power reserves give the
28B-SST2 virtually perfect freedom from overload on any type
of speaker or music, bringing the performance and realism directly into
your listening environment. The 28B's ability to resolve subtle musical
details has to be heard to be believed.

The feature list includes selectable input (balanced
XLR or single ended RCA), selectable gain, external power on-off control
via 12-volt trigger, and a new micro controlled soft start. All AC is
totally shielded from the audio circuits. As a result, the 28B-SST2 maintains exceptionally low noise and distortion from very low to very high power demands.

Impressive Power Supply

The Bryston 28B-SST2 is a single channel
mono block power amplifier capable of delivering over 1000+ watts of
power. To provide this power the 28B power supply utilizes a 2000 VA
custom power transformer, with 120,000 uf of filter capacitance, supply
rails of +/- 90v. The component layout has been optimized so power path
lengths are very short, and all wire has been eliminated after the power
transformer.

The Bryston 28B-SST2 employs a total new
computer modeled heat sink design maximizing heat dissipation for
long-term "fan-free" operation into the most demanding speaker loads

Unique Burn-In Procedure

Each and every Bryston product undergoes a very
extensive "burn-in" procedure. Following a complete operational
checkout, every amplifier is placed on a test-bench and cycled on and
off at one hour intervals for 4 days at full output. This extremely
rigorous burn-in quickly "matures" components and weeds out any
potential premature failures. The result is reliable trouble-free
performance for many years, and is backed by Bryston's exclusive 20-year
full warranty.

Hand-Assembled With Care

Bryston hand assembles and individually tests each
and every product we manufacture. The Canadian company exclusively use
only the finest components in its amplifier designs, such as 1% and 0.1%
metal-film resistors, polystyrene capacitors and hand selected and
