Modification to the ELAC B6 Debut Series 6.5” Speakers

Many moons ago, we posted an ad for modifying an exceptional for its price Pioneer SW-8mk2 subwoofer designed by eminent speaker designer, Andrew Jones. Not too long after he made that subwoofers and the accompanying speakers for Pioneer, he moved over to Elac.  Elac must have given him more resources and design freedom, because he designed an even better subwoofer and his Elac speakers have gotten rave reviews by various Audiophile magazines, such as the "Absolute Sound"and "Stereophile."

“The demo pair (ELAC B5) produced jaw-dropping sound—and not just "for the money." It was naturally weighted with a smooth yet detailed top end, uncolored mids, surprisingly solid and extended lows, and superb imaging.” - Thomas J Norton, Stereophile, The Show Newport, 2015

The Show Newport 2015 coverage

"Best Sound (for the money): The Andrew-Jones-designed ELAC Debut B5 ($229 per pair—that’s not a misprint) may not only be the greatest bargain at the Newport show, but may turn out to be the greatest bargain in the history of audio. This tiny econo-box was spectacularly, stunningly, amazingly great for the price. I can’t wait to hear the higher-end speakers Jones is developing for ELAC" – Robert Harley, The Absolute Sound, April 2015.

And while they are very good speakers for their price out of the box, they are substantially better when modified. Having modified speakers, subwoofers, and other electronics for the better part of 15 yrs, we implemented some of those techniques to these speakers, and got really good results. Depending on speaker, we do a variety of techniques such improving the movement of the drivers, working on the crossover, rewiring, and sometimes even some optimizing the inner acoustics of the box. Most speakers, we have found, have certain fundamental issues that can be addressed by modification to cause the speaker to then be capable of reproducing sound at its fullest potential.

Upon modification, the ELAC B6 Debut Series 6.5” speakers were able to produce better bloom, have improved clarity and detail, and have more precise bass control, texture, and better depth. Location is also improved. And the speaker is more open sounding with a wider sound stage. This modification also causes the speakers to be a bit easier to place in rooms, as some customers reported them being a bit bass heavy / boomy when placed within 18 inches of the back of certain rooms.

A subwoofer, we have found, is very complimentary to these modified bookshelf speakers. Elac provides a very good one of those as well for a very affordable price, The Elac Debut S10 Subwoofer, which can also be modified, and made to be an exceptional subwoofer. The sale price for that modification, when bought in combination with a speaker modification,  is $295 for the modification (Regularly $325 due to higher shipping costs). The subwoofer can be bought online for typically around $249. The modification on both the subwoofer and speakers causes these units to compete very favorably with units that are literally thousands more in price.

The price of a modified pair of ELAC B6 Debut Series 6.5” speakers through this is $554 total, which includes the product, modification cost, and free shipping and handling back to you in the continental USA once it is modified. Feel free to ship your own ELAC B6 Debut Series 6.5" Bookshelf Speakers, Elac Uni-Fi B5 Bookshelf Speakers (We just modified a pair of Uni-fi B5 last week, and they turned out very much improved) , Elac Debut Series B5 speakers, ELAC Debut B4 Series Speakers, Elac Debut F6 Tower Speakers, Elac Debut F5 Tower Speakers, Pioneer SP-BS22 LR Bookshelf speakers, Pioneer SPF-S52 Tower Speakers, and other speaker and subwoofer brands. We also modify the Pioneer SW-8mk2 subwoofer, The Elac S10 Debut, S10EQ, S12EQ subwoofers, and other brands and models of subwoofers. Inquire if a modification is available for your subwoofer or speaker. Heavier and larger subwoofers, and heavier speakers will result in more cost of modification, as the shipping will be more expensive.

If you want to send in your own speaker, our modification price is currently $295 to have your ELAC bookshelf speaker modified (More for the towers, as shipping will be considerably more), which includes free shipping and handling back to you in the continental USA. Turn around time is 3-5 business days.

FREE SHIPPING AND HANDLING BACK TO YOU IS INCLUDED IN THE MODIFICATION PRICE

We also modify all makes and models of receivers, players and other pieces. We can also modify such subwoofer brands as Velodyne, JL Audio, REL, and others. We also modify Rotel, Harman Kardon, Pioneer Elite, Peach Tree, Mark Levinson, Parasound, and other pieces.

Customer Feedback

Every once in a while, we get emails back from customers that take the time to let us know how they liked their modified units.

"Hello Sean,

Finally received the amp (Music Hall A15.3 Amplifier) from FedEx today, been listening to the amplifier for several hours now.

I have no intelligent audio superlatives to share. This little baby sounds simply amazing. What amazing dynamics, staging and real bass weight. What was veiled and subdued previously is gone.

The AJ Pioneer Bookshelves are leaving here tomorrow for you to work your magic.

Thank you to you and your team. You have a customer for life.

Very pleased with the result.

Best regards,"

"Good evening Sean,

All hooked up. Listening to CD. Dire Straits Communique.   Cant believe it Sean. Cant believe this quality of music, of fidelity, is coming from these bookshelves! They are so open, clear, airy. No grey overcast here man! The pace, rhythm and timing is exceptional now. It is just so right.   They are standing beside their big brother floor stander I was listening to earlier this week. There is no comparison. I cant imagine what that modification would sound like. Damn.   Cant wait for the subwoofer to land. Oh man am I going to be happy happy.   Nice work folks. Friggin awesome.   Take care and best regards,"

"Hi Sean

I had a chance to do some listening to the modified Oppo (103) player and was not prepared for the difference in sound I heard compared to the stock unit. Most noticeably, the sound stage has hugely expanded, which, upon first hearing, made me shake my head in disbelief. The location of the instruments is more precise and the low end frequency much more palpable. There is just "more" of everything in the presentation of the music. I have had many mods done to my audio equipment over the years and your mod ranks near the top of the list for the degree for sonic improvement for the investment. You mod is a huge improvement over the already fine stock unit. Thanks a million!" Mark from California

Sean,

I love the sound of the modified (Pioneer BDP-53FD) player. I have it hooked up using the analog inputs. I didn’t change anything in my set up except to swap players. It sounds way different than the Denon 2900: better in every way. The biggest difference for me was how the player made the speakers disappear. Does that make sense? Music sounded ok with the Denon, but it was just a source to play cd’s, nothing special.

I listen to all types of music: swing music from the 30’s and 40’s, Latin or Salsa music for dancing, smooth jazz for night time listening, 70’s soft rock and classic rock. I’m all over the board. The player did make a difference in the presentation of the music. One example is the bass: the Denon’s bass was rather bloated. I didn’t notice this until i had the chance to listen to the Pioneer. The Pioneer’s bass was more natural. The bass blended better with the music and didn’t sound like it was “in your face”.

The vocals sound great as well. Even my 14 year old commented on how the voices sounded smoother and more natural. He even mentioned that it sounded like there was a center channel speaker hidden somewhere for the voices to come out of and “float in the air”. Nope, just my Tekton Lore speakers.

The Pioneer has taken my listening enjoyment to a new level. Kudos to whoever designed the mod because it does sound awesome!

Thank you,

Javier

Here is feedback from one of our modified HK 990 units from a customer:

Sean,

Forgive the late feedback, but just to say I absolutely love the amp. This is just the sound I was looking for.

Thank you,

Andrew
