The Do It Yourself (or DIY) market is full of budget products that make a nice difference at low price points. What we have here is the extreme end of that, how about the components that are available to people that extreme power cords are made from? Power cords that cost thousands, at the ultra extreme end of that are power cords costing over $5000 out to $20,000 and more. As a dealer I am specializing in the bulk cables that are available for interconnects, speaker wires, and power cords.
You might not be aware of this, but there are only a few manufacturers that are making bulk cables for a vast array of OEM cable manufacturers. There are a few significant patented breakthrough ways to make ultra high quality sound characteristics in wire. Japanese companies are making cables that have refined the crystalline structure of copper to where when the draw out the wire strands they are getting different degrees of one crystal that draws out several feet. This makes a conductor with few molecular gaps or spaces between the copper crystals. There are proprietary copper processes beyond the old school OFC such as OCC and PCOCC One is resorting to using diamond dies to draw the strands through so that they have an incredible degree of micro polishing because they have found that this does make a difference. When you are terminating these specialty wires it's important to be careful not to nick or scratch the strands when stripping the insulation off. The highest tech and most expensive use different sized strands that bundle perfectly so as to reduce spaces and facilitate the conductivity of different frequencies. They try an array of insulation materials and determine the coloration each imparts, they have developed microscopic particles of gold and silver mixtures that fill in the surface that further improve the sound. Furutech makes one 10 gauge cable that is available as a DIY cable at $600 a meter, that cable is used to make one of their proprietary cables that is retail priced at almost $8000. Their best power plug ends are $385 each. So basically this means that the do it yourselfer can make a highly regarded power cord that sells for $5000 more for around $2000. In fact I recently did an internet search to see what manufacturers are using the Furutech FI-50 NCF plugs and couldn't find anything under $7000 or so and they are used in power cords costing out to $20k. When a manufacturer uses a component for a commercially available product the price of each part will be marked up as much as three and four times. A manufacturer will be charging well over $1500 just to cover the $700 plugs they use for the ends, they have to cover the wire, the mesh jacket they use, shrink tubing, custom printing logos, etc., and that isn't getting into overheads and marketing.
Offering bulk cable is one thing, taking the time and spending substantial money trying the different cables that are available to manufacturers is another thing entirely. Part of what goes with bulk is buying bulk spools, a bulk spool of $600 a meter cable is no joke when it comes time to buy a 40 meter spool. Smaller cables come in 100 meter spools. But the service I am offering is that I am going to be trying these cables at different price points so that you can be getting the most at a given price knowing there isn't anything better that doesn't cost a lot more. I have a the exact power cord I'm selling here as a reference so that I can figure out directly when I find something I think sounds better at this price point. I also put this plug combination on different cables so that I can get a feel for how much difference the cable makes and how much difference the end plugs are making. Not many people take the time to figure out what three different levels of power plugs do with any given wire. I am tying up thousands of dollars doing it and it will take months of work to satisfy myself where the best combinations of wire and plugs are.
This 6 foot power cord is one I will be selling soon for at least $1200, it will compare out to a grand more, it has two very high end Furutech plugs on the ends, the $225 FI-48(R) wall plug, and the $345 FI-50 carbon fiber EIC. I'm offering a promotional price on this $1200 power cord for a reason. Once you hear the stunning difference these make, and then upgrade your interconnects and speaker cables accordingly, I will be offering incremental upgrades that will all knock your socks off. I intend to show people incremental performance improvements that are jaw dropping. But more importantly, I will trade in whatever you have gotten from me at the full price toward an upgrade. I am investing in a group of people that I can walk through a series of improvements that are each stunning in their own right. Each one made gets better than the one before because of the cumulative quality. Once this process has been started correctly and in the right order there are further improvements to be had that will blow away any component or speaker upgrade. That to me is what defines the debate concerning how much to spend. Regardless of whether you make some wire upgrades that have blown you away, if the expenditure from there of a few thousand dollars outperforms any high dollar preamp, amps, or speakers, the wire needs to be brought to the point where money spent improving components makes a bigger improvement than the same money in wire would. Component and speaker upgrades when vast performance is not realized because of inferior wires and power cords is the most profound waste of money I could ever imagine short of putting mini van tires on a Ferrari. People say, "but I heard a difference when I went to a $10,000 preamp", fine, you would have heard ten times the difference had the money been spent on cables first, then when you have great cables everything you get sounds way way better. I'll put a few thousand worth of equipment with $10,000 worth of cable up against any $50k worth with mediocre wire and power cords any day. When I say mediocre I don't mean cheap, there is some real junk out there that costs $3500 for interconnects, $5000 for speaker cables, and $2500 for power cords. Guys buy $2500 power cords and are impressed by the improvement, but without having neutral high resolution wire they don't have a clue what they are really doing.
The shipping will be $12.00 for Priority insured, which actually costs more, but I'm not trying to make money on shipping, just cover part of the cost. You can use credit cards that I will run through my wife's veterinary clinic, she does add 3% to cover her fees, and she pays taxes on that revenue coming through her business, so if you live in California there will be sales tax. I sell cable with a money back guarantee, and have literally never had anyone want their money back. Please contact me regarding payment, I do not use paypal. There is an upgrade I can do for $50, and that is to make them with cryo treated wire, and then burn them in for you on my cable burner. I have adapters that allow me to burn in as many as 10 power cords at a time, they should go for about five days and that saves you from a couple of hundred hours in your system.
I will be listing different DIY cable, terminations, and plugs, but have a lot of work to do to quantify how this military cable stacks up against the higher end do it yourself products out there. I am absolutely positive that this military cable does very well against serious bulk products, mated with the highest end terminations you will be spending thousands more to come close let alone to match it. It is my intent to raise the price in a few weeks to whatever commercially available cable it still outperforms, and I guarantee that the price is going up.
These represent a performance bargain that will stand you in very good service as you upgrade interconnects and speaker cable. It is okay to call me and make deals off of Audiogon as I have a dealer status, you can reach me at 530-957-0966 or my email is [email protected]
(Info #4) Power Cords And What They Add There is quite a lively debate about power cords, hearing differences, how much to spend, where the performance improvements drop off, etc. I'll cover some of the basics that explain what they add and why you may not hear much difference if there are weak interconnects or speaker cables in the system. This goes into the same premise of one thing adding to another that runs through my discussions of interconnects, speaker cables, and power cords.
First of all what you are going to hear power cords do is dependent on the quality of both your interconnects and speaker cables. They make a difference that equates to deeper and more detailed bass, ambiance, depth, separation, and I'm talking about deeper levels than interconnects and speaker cables do. If the I/c's and spkr cables do not have higher levels of resolution, the higher resolution the power cords are bringing to the table will not be heard. For that to be heard the other cables have to be capable of performing in that realm. That doesn't mean you aren't going to hear anything at all, but there are many people who try better power cords and can't hear anything. The qualifying thing here is that they have very marginal wire in their systems, and many of these people think they have great wire because they spent a few hundred dollars. Not knowing what cable had to be done first to actually hear differences can make a lot of time and money spent on trying interconnects worthless. I can say with absolute conviction that the person that can't hear the difference between a stock power cord and a decent aftermarket one, or an entry level and a truly excellent one, needs better interconnects and/or speaker wire. As I put different information up from the book I am writing on system synergy I'll be covering more on the common sense behind what is going on, which cables make the biggest differences, and why that is.
As you start the upgrade process there are different approaches, but there needs to be an overall awareness that upgrading takes an approach that hinges on being able to hear incremental improvements made. Discussing which of one thing to start with I think you need to have a speaker cable that lets you hear the differences in things that are being compared. Without having a certain known quality of speaker cable you can rely on being neutral there is no way you can hear differences in interconnects let alone trust that coloration that is objectionable isn't coming from the speaker cable not the interconnects. Just because you didn't hear an edginess when trying speaker cable doesn't mean that edginess in better interconnects isn't being contributed to with something in the speaker cable. To me once you have excellent speaker cables, then interconnects, and then power cords will sound freaky good.
I recently had a conversation with another dealer who has compared a vast array of wires, power cords, and power conditioners. When I told him I like to start people with speaker cables so they can hear what is going on with interconnects then power cords he responded with a no way, power cords first, that they make a good difference, then when people try interconnects and speaker wire those make an even bigger difference because they are also hearing undiscovered benefits of the power cords along with the wire. The downside of that IMO is that this relies on an act of faith in the suggestions that takes away the incremental item by item comparisons that suit to taste and preference.
I put an excellent interconnect and speaker cable set up that is bargain priced as well.

Since cables go through a break in period I expect that they be given the chance to be used for a couple hundred hours. Also soldering ends or terminations can radically alter the neutral character of the cable. If it takes longer than 30 days to give them a fair chance I will still honor my money back guarantee.
