Current model Boulder 1008 phono amplifier. (The Boulder 2008 model phono amp has been discontinued.)
Boulder amplifiers are American-made with a build quality second to none. When you operate the controls of this beauty, you get the impression it will last forever.
Perhaps the most complete feature set found on any high-end phono amplifier:
1. 100% Balanced design providing 70db gain (enough even for my low-output Lyra Etna SL cartridge)
2. Two sets of balanced inputs (set of Boulder-manufactured RCA/XLR adapters included if your tonearm is wired single-ended and you don't want to rewire balanced)
3. Two sets of balanced outputs (Great for recording)
4. Mono Switch (Removes surface noise when playing Mono records)
5. Pre-RIAA Equalization Curves (EMI, Columbia, FFRR) (Restore frequency balance to 1950's Mono recordings)
6. Mute Button
7. Low-cut Rumble Filter (Save amps and speakers from subsonic frequencies)
From the rave Tone Audio review:
The Boulder 1008 does everything right and nothing wrong. If you think you need
vacuum tubes to get depth and delicacy in a top shelf phono stage, think again.
You can say goodbye to tubes forever and not miss a molecule of music with the 1008.
From the Stereophile (Michael Fremer) review, comparing the 1008 to the $32,000 Boulder 2008 model:
Like the 2008, the far less expensive 1008 was neither bright nor etched nor
hi-fi sounding—unless the record or the associated equipment was. In fact, the
1008's basic tonal character was somewhat reserved, slightly soft, and almost on the
dark side of neutral, in a stately, burnished sense. The midrange was slightly
recessed, certainly in comparison with the AMR, but the top octaves were anything
but dry or overetched, and the lower ones were neither overdamped nor too tightly
sprung, and thus lacking in suppleness and texture. Image resolution and
information retrieval were impressive, though the 2008 can extract even
more. Interestingly, direct comparisons revealed that the 1008 produced richer
midrange frequencies than the 2008, resulting in a tonal presentation that was
more fleshy and harmonically more vivid.
Boulder provides pull-out "personality cards" on which custom resistors can be soldered to adjust the amp input impedance. If you read the reviews you'll find the reviewers felt the factory-supplied 100 Ohm resistors were ideal and they were indeed for my system. However, I found a good source for ultra-precision Vishay bare metal foil resistors and I am including two sets of highest precision resistors at two other values (see photo) which you can use if you want to play with the input impedance.
I am selling the Boulder, along with a few other components from my system, to finance the purchase of a very high-end (and very expensive) phono amp.
