These are the well
know and highly rated Zaph Audio SR71 design with Seas drivers and bamboo
veneer using the Madissound kit. They are completely built and are plug and play. To see more about the design, copy & paste
this: https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/2-way-speaker-kits/zaph%7Caudio-sr71-kit-pair-parts-only/  I made them myself here in my
Indiana wood shop. My price just covers the materials used so somebody is going to get a great deal.  I see similar speakers selling for double this price.  http://www.ascendacoustics.com/pages/products/speakers/SRM2/srm2.html

 Both
drivers are from the Seas Prestige lineup. The Prestige line offers
unparalleled performance for the price. The mid/bass is the ER18RNX
(H1456), a
7” Reed/Paper Pulp Cone woofer with a copper shorting ring in the magnet
system. This driver provides smooth response, excellent excursion and very low
distortion. The tweeter is the extremely popular 27TDFC
(H1189).
This ferrofluid cooled tweeter employs a High Definition pre-coated fabric dome
with a wide soft polymer surround. The optimally dampened rear chamber allows
for a low crossover point.

This
kit is designed for use a 0.5cf rear ported enclosure. Detailed cabinet plans
are available on Zaph
Audio

I
made a couple of improvements
to the original design.  I used 1"
thick material for added rigidity and beveled the woofer hole inside edge for
improved air flow and better sound.  The
cabinet has 2 internal braces as well and the inside volume was kept to the
optimal size for the Seas drivers.  I was
a little skeptical when I built this speaker; how could a speaker this
affordable sound good?  I have been a
Magnepan owner for over 20 years now and box speakers had never impressed
me.  However, these SR71 surprised
me.  I think they are just as good as my
beloved Magnepan 1.7s that cost $2000.
In fact, they are more dynamic and impactful than the Magnepans.  As proof, you can see my Magnepan's up for
sale on Audiogon as I write this.  I plan
to make several pair of these SR71, and keep 1
pair for myself to replace the Magnepans.

Crossover Information:  The SR71 crossovers come
professionally assembled on a Matrix circuit board. The parts hold to the exact
values called for in the scematic. High quality parts are used throughout the
paralel circuits, including film capacitors and air core inductors. The series
tweeter circuit uses metal oxide resistors and a Clarity ESA Cap, while
the series woofer circuit uses a low DCR Sledgehammer Steel Laminate
15AWG inductor.  The series inductor
in the crossover may also be upgraded to a Goertz Copper Foil 14AWG. Tube amp
users should consider adding the impedance flattening circuit to the crossover.
All these options are available on the drop down menu above.  These speakers
have the optional
tweeter attenuator circuit installed and the tweeters sound very smooth, no
listener fatigue here.

05/11/2015 - 02:23:28 PM SR71 I’ve built two pairs of SR71 speakers, the first as a wedding gift to my daughter and her husband. After hearing this pair I was so impressed I build a second pair, just completed, and these are for me. This is a great design, very easy to listen to and I highly recommend it. With the second pair, I did increase the cabinet volume slightly from 14 liters to about 17 liters. The baffle size remains the same, the cabinet just got a little deeper and I added a bit more bracing. I don’t have the original pair I built available for a direct comparison but the new pair seem to go just a bit deeper and the mids seem a bit more open sounding. (Maybe just the placebo effect?) I have a somewhat challenging room for audio and these speakers sound better than any of the other speakers I’ve tried. Warm, full bodied for such a small speaker with a smooth overall sound and good imaging. Even my non audio friends noticed how good they sound. I’m sure you can get even better sound from more expensive kits but it seems to me that this design might represent the best value verses sound you’re likely to find. I built my own cabinets so discounting my time, I have about $550 in the pair. You would need to spend $2000 a pair to get anything near this performance level from a commercial speaker.

06/03/2013 - 11:56:34 PM Granite Monitor I bought this kit last year and set them into a custom built Granite enclosure. At first I thought like there was a lack of low range and the highs where over polluting the sound. I then did some adjustments (added some more sound fill), and they came alive. I have taken my speakers to numerous HiFi shops around my area, the employees stand amazed at the clarity. I have run them against my families Totums and Keff (reference III)'s and they are 2x clearer than them. They tend to bring up the music 'fill' that is added during mix downs. Dire Straits - Brother In Arms has a whole new sound to it now.
I highly recommend this kit. Great quality speakers and x-overs for the money.

03/15/2013 - 08:16:53 AM Best Bookshelf! I bought SR71 parts only, and finished building it in Dec. 2012. For a first time DIYer, building the cabinets was painful. Thanks to Zaph's excellent design and detailed documents, it turned out well worthy. The sound quality is superb! Comparing with some $1,000 price range commercial builds, SR71 is apparently at a higher level; and with no exception, all my friends were astonished by the sound quality.
I highly recommend SR71 as a 2-Way bookshelf DIY project, and it indeed is a classic.

SR71 'Built the SR-71 s when they first came out nearly 2 years ago and haven't had any desire to upgrade since. Read Zaph's page for this to make sure you understand how they should be setup. If you do not have a similar environment, there are several variations on how to modify the crossover for less baffle step etc. I bought the precut baffle and built the cabs. There's no overhyped bass, so you may want to use a deep sub for the very lowest lows' Review by Jeff Paoletti. Posted by Madisound.

SR71 'I built this kit around a month ago. For the first 20 hours or so, I was not impressed. After that? Well, they sing like heaven. I have a small listening room, around 10 x 12 x 8. I had been using Totem Arro's. Up to the SR71's, the Arro's were the best speakers I had tried in this small room. The Arro's won't be going back. The SR71's meet or exceed everything the Arro's do well. Plus, the bass response is much better. Full, deep and tight, the bass response is superb in my small room. I really don't think anyone could do better for twice the price. For those who can do excellent cabinet work, this kit is worthy of your best work. I bought the kit with the cabinets. While the supplied cabinets are very nice, I'm thinking about having someone build a set of cabinets worthy of these loudspeakers. Very nice speakers, to say the least!' Review by Merle Scruggs.
