I have had a desire to build up a 301 and refurbish it to see what it sounded like, well- it crushes anything I have ever heard. I played different cartridges that I like very much on it and it was the same, extended highs, creamy/articulate mids, and bass that is like no other table I have experienced.
On this particular oil bearing offering we went all out, the original paint was sand blasted, then the deck was sanded, the paint is a pearlescent white powder coat (very durable). The motor was taken apart, cleaned, and lubed (both top AND bottom bearings). The linkages were all stripped of the old toxic covering and they were sent to England for a new finish. All of the non-motor springs are new. It has a new thrust plate and bearing, the spindle was re-lubed. All electrical contacts were cleaned and work perfectly and it has a new twisted three wire power cable (the motor is now grounded). All of the control knobs are new. The wrap on the 301 is that the deck is thin aluminum and has flex and resonates. This one had metal loaded Clear Flex poured into the bottom and is rock steady.
Ken Shindo said that particle board (MDF) robs these tables of dynamics, which is why he uses hard wood. This one has a solid walnut top that is almost one inch thick! The bottom is Baltic birch plywood, the base is solid hickory. This is a quiet, musical plinth with good mass.
Since the platter was made for Jolly Old England (50 hz)- a free KAB strobe will be included. (the table is currently set to US 60 hz standards) The platter sports an original Garrard 301 mat. but we suggest a new Funk Firm platter mat as well, judged to be the best mat for the money by me, here. (Funk mat show in some photos)
This is an oil bearing 301 which has been cleaned and re-oiled.
This 301 has a very special tonearm. It was made by Alfred Bokrand from an Ortofon AS-212 on which he has placed a 12″ wand. The workmanship is first class and it tracks like a dream. This model of Ortofon arm is known for its pivot set up- it has wonderful bearings, it has a two part counter weight that will allow for a SPU with built in transformer. The arms Alfred builds have silver plated copper internal wire which was a little to bright for my liking, that was replaced in this arm with my favorite… 1877 copper wire- it sounds sublime. Read about the arm build here. (shown with a SPU cartridge & headshell which does NOT come with the table. We have two SPU cartridges available, an SPU G without the transformer and a newer headshell, and an SP-15 with transformer and older headshell. These are available for this turntable at reasonable prices, please contact us if interested.) If you opt not to chose one of our Ortofon cartridges a nice headshell will be provided. Unit also comes with an extra blank armboard. Please visit cryo-parts for live links. Shipping at $65 is CONUS only! No non US sales.
