I am the original owner of this remarkable Berkeley Alpha DAC, Series 1. It is finished in black and in excellent condition, cosmetically and functionally. Included are the remote, the original box, packaging, power cord and manual.
At its original price of $4,995.00, Computer Audiophile raved that it was a “high-end bargain” that “could honestly sell for twice or three times the price.” https://www.computeraudiophile.com/ca/reviews/berkeley-audio-design-alpha-dac-review/
In The Absolute Sound review, Robert Harley found it to be “the best-sounding outboard digital-to-analog converter I’ve heard.” ”http://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/berkeley-audio-design-alpha-dac-1/
A great feature of the Alpha DAC is its volume control, which allows it to be connected directly to a power amplifier, thus dispensing with pre-amplification. According to Robert Harley, the Alpha DAC “only reveals its full potential with no preamplifier in the signal path.” With the remote, you can adjust sound level, channel balance, polarity, muting, input selection, and display dimming.
The DAC already sounds great. But its capabilities can be further expanded with a Field-Installable MQA Rendering Upgrade available directly from Berkeley Audio Design. http://www.berkeleyaudiodesign.com/news-1/ According to Berkeley, the MQA Rendering Upgrade provides unmatched MQA Rendering capability and significantly improved audio quality with standard PCM, non-MQA recordings for any existing Alpha DAC.
