Legendary Original B&W Nautilus "Shell" Speakers

A rare opportunity to own a work of art and an iconic piece of audio history

A triumph of aesthetic and acoustic design, they have been called the best speakers in the world.

It’s obvious that Nautilus is no ordinary loudspeaker, even before you listen to it. That’s because it’s the product of no ordinary speaker manufacturer. The Nautilus is the end result of the most ambitious research and development project Bowers & Wilkins has ever undertaken – to create, as near as possible, the perfect loudspeaker.

A pair of Original B&W Nautilus "Shell" Speakers in excellent condition (serial # 299 and 300). These are the latest version, manufactured in 1997. Tested before listing and sound fantastic. Includes crossover networks, protective front covers, owners manual, and shipping crates with custom molded foam inserts. MSRP $60,000. Our last pair of Original Nautilus Shell speakers in comparable condition sold for $27,500 a month ago. Serious inquiries only please.

Photos show the actual items for sale. Matching serial numbers are printed on each speaker cable and on the back of each crossover (as originally sent by B&W, there are no serial number plates on the stone bases). The only minor cabinet finish imperfection we noted is a very fine line (1.5") below the left bass driver; this scratch vs finish craze is so subtle it's barely noticeable on most photos except when a closeup was taken with lighting and camera angle carefully chosen to highlight it.

Single owner, from the estate of a passionate audiophile and serious collector where these speakers had minimal use because the owner had multiple audio setups. Purchased from the Pacific Northwest’s premiere dealer (Definitive Audio). Maintained in a smoke-free and pet-free climate controlled environment.

From B&W:  Now recognised as a design classic, the original Bowers & Wilkins Nautilus is not just our flagship product, but the very pinnacle of technological innovation to which all others must aspire. It is the result of a groundbreaking, five year research and development programme to achieve, as near as possible, the perfect loudspeaker. The Bowers & Wilkins Nautilus has been greeted worldwide as an outstanding loudspeaker which will shape the direction of the audio industry well into the new millennium. Already sought after by cognoscenti, it has been unashamedly designed with the serious audiophile in mind, not only because of its size and shape but also because of its active design – the crossover network is positioned between the pre and power amplifiers. This means that a full Nautilus system needs one stereo pre-amplifier and eight monobloc or four stereo power amplifiers per pair (amplifiers of 100 watts upwards are recommended, with 500 watts being the optimum for the low frequency drive unit).
